On A Clear Day, You Can See GM Going Broke...

Steve Larsen died, and that's a damn shame. It really is. Probably a good guy, had kids & a wife. The sort of Model Citizen Bend Needs.

Really. He's actually exactly what Bend needs and Wants.

We talk about the relentless selfishness of Bend PR & Marketing, drawing people in and selling them gobs of Bend bullshit, most of which they don't need.

And the whole "Work Hard, Play Hard" motif is a thread that runs throughout. Search "Olympic Athletes" on the Bully. "Olympic Athletes are everywhere you turn...", and so forth.

Then they get to the sticky business of a Bend Super-Athlete Posterchild Success... dying. And not just dying... Dying While Exercising. That's... not good... for business.

Hmmmm.... now what?

Is it possible all this Mad Pursuit of Exercise Excess is... gulp... Bad For You?

No. No, no, no, no, no. No. It's fine. It's STILL good for you. And as May West can attest, Too Much Of A Good Thing Is.... Wonderful.

And That is what Bend really stands for. Excess. Too Much.

But let's say you are John Costa, and you can't let the lemmings start to question The Message... what do you do? You obfuscate, of course.

39 years old, a pro athlete collapses and dies. How can this happen?

Larsen was declared dead at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. He died from sudden cardiac arrest, but what caused the cardiac condition remains unknown.

“There’s a lot of things that can happen,” said Deschutes County Medical Examiner Steve Cross. “And the problem here is this very vigorous, healthy, relatively young 39-year-old who is a world-class athlete dies while exercising.

It’s not supposed to happen. It’s not supposed to happen, and it did.”

“Did exercise cause it to happen? No. He has something that has yet to be explained,” Cross said.

Cross said an autopsy showed no obvious signs of coronary heart disease. Larsen’s heart has been sent to a laboratory in the Midwest where it will be analyzed.

...

“When you’re young and you’re healthy and you have potential underlying conditions, it’s challenging to find them,” he said.

Both Widmer and McLellan said heart conditions can lead to symptoms like shortness of breath, or even to sudden death.

For some, the first symptom is sudden death,” McLellan said.

...

“Our vision of Steve is the healthiest, fittest guy you would ever know. He was an absolute specimen,” said Teague Hatfield, owner of FootZone, a local athletic store. “He’s always the guy who is faster and stronger than everyone else, and just a good guy.”

Michael Larsen, also an athlete, said he believes a grandfather died of a heart attack, and his father is in poor health. But he said he’s not aware of any family history of heart problems. He believes his brother did go to the family’s general practitioner once he had trouble breathing, but he wasn’t positive.

OK. Read that. He died from cardiac arrest, but What Caused His Cardiac Arrest remains "UNKNOWN"? What? Really?

It was his fucking HEART, you dumbfucks!

They're sending this guys HEART TO A LAB. THAT is how serious this shit is to Costa.

If I drop dead on a jog, will they send MY heart to a lab? Fuck no, they'll throw my fat ass in the nearest dumpster and call it good.

"He died from sudden cardiac arrest, but what caused the cardiac condition remains unknown."

WTF? That's like saying, "He died of a GUNSHOT wound, but the source of the gunshot is STILL UNKNOWN."

IT WAS A FUCKING GUN!

Holy shit, talk about Collateral Damage Control:

It’s not supposed to happen, and it did.

Did exercise cause it to happen? No.

This is the fucking CORONER! He hasn't even looked at the body, and the fucker ALREADY has a NEGATIVE DIAGNOSIS.

Q: "Did he die from exercise, Doc?"

A: "FUCK NO!"

Q: "Was he exercising when he died?"

A: "Bitch, I'm going to get my gun if you mention that again!"

Q: "Was it his heart, then?"

A: "WTF? How the fuck should I know, Bitch! I haven't even seen the body!"

Q: "But there's a quote in the paper where you say it wasn't exercise, it was 'something yet to be explained'. So do you know the cause or not?"

A: "FUCK YOU! I'm calling Costa, Hollern, and the fucking cops!"

If you EVER wonder just what the fuck is going on in this town, RE-READ the piece covering Larsen's DEATH WHILE EXERCISING. Read how many times they tell you how he died... then they tell you THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW HE DIED. THEN they tell you confidently how he DID NOT DIE.

World-class athlete. Good guy. I feel very bad for his family, wife & kids. It's a loss.

But to MAGGOTS like Costa, it's an incursion into THE KOOL-AID MESSAGE. A chink in the fucking armor. Larsen's death was an EXTREME INCONVENIENCE to people like Costa.

People like Larsen are Marketing Piece #1 to the Wall-To-Wall Olympic Athlete image that has been crammed down our throats. And one of them DYING while doing Their Thing, is Bad, BAD news for Costa.

Re-read that piece. It ain't about Larsen. It's about preserving Bend PR & Marketing at all Cost - ahs.

So we got unemployment figures for Bend this week, and yawwwwwwwwwwwn they were absolutely awful.

Just another in a long line of nails in the Bend Miracle Coffin.

I don't know about you, but I saw U-Hauls this weekend as far as the eye could see. They are everywhere.

And this is it. The Big Weekend! Kids outta school in under 2 wks! Mommy & Daddy are outta work!

Time to LEAVE BEND! Yeah!!!!

This is it, folks. You won't hear it anywhere, except maybe on the Wandering Eye. The Great Gutting of Bend has begun.

I would bet that 5-10% of this great City will pack up & go in the next 90 days. That's between 4-8,000 people who are going to Abandon The Bend Dream.

No? Drive along Purcell, between Costco & the hospital. Drive to the base of Pilot Butte. That there is Rental Central, and that motherfucker has alone provided a Big Boost to the FOR RENT sign business. EVERYTHING is for rent up in there.

Drive around, look on craigslist. Bend is going to STD Rental Hell.

And there'll be no one to rent to. 4-8K are leaving in the next 90 days. And it ain't gonna be picked up in survey's of UNITED VAN LINES.

OK, that's for fuckers WITH MONEY. No one in this shithole, bled-dry town has a fucking cent.

No... people are leaving in U-Hauls and their fucking CARS. They are selling or abandoing their shit, and just driving away.

You watch: We'll see population signs on the outskirts of Bend that DO NOT read "80,995" in 8-10 years. It'll be back in the 60's.... or 50's...

So we're in the early stages of a recovery, right? We've got our Green Shoots, recovering DJIA, Spring is in the air, and such...

Market look fantastic! All my stuff is recovering nicely, thank you very much (except the stuff that went Chap 11, but let us not talk of trifles...). The market, the most dependable indicator we've got, is pointing to a nice bounce in The Real Economy... by the looks of it, probably later this year.

Right?

Wrong.

Sorry, but the market had this implosion Dead Fucking Wrong from The Word Go. Housing started crapping out starting in JULY 2006... and the DJIA didn't top out till OCTOBER 2007!

The market has done an abysmal job at discounting the effects of the complete destruction of about 1/3rd of this countries wealth. And the rest of the World did no better. Of course, NOWHERE is the prediction business WORSE than right here in Bend Oregon.

The Bully STILL maintains that the Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow... despite the fact that the sun has never really gone down. It's all in our heads. Have some Kool-Aid.

No, markets & media have done a disatrous job calling this Great Recession.

But BY GOD they feel 100% CONFIDENT calling it's end. And it's END IS NIGH MOTHERFUCKER!

Yeah, the exact same bitches who could not see this fucker coming a mile away, are confidently calling it OVER in Q3. Q4 at the latest. The Bully, in classic dumbfuck fashion, says that it all ended a year ago April 25, before it even started.

It's ain't over. Not by a mile.

What could possibly go wrong?

First, commercial RE. Commercial RE isn't even close to hitting bottom. Hell, it ain't even to the point of Maximum Decline.
Commercial RE default rates, based on "seasoning".

X-axis is months of seasoning, Y-axis is default rates. That real steep brown line is commercial RE deals done right at the Bubble's top, while the flat dark blue one is deals done years earlier.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that commercial RE, a wealth storehouse rivaled only by residential housing (maybe), has yet to see the other shoe drop.

We're in a vicious deleveraging cycle, and this sort of thing doesn't just "stop". It grinds on and on and on... Look at the Japs: 20 years later and the fuckers are still mired in the World's longest Modern Day Depression. That's what's coming our way.

What's next? The future is plastics...
Credit card default rates ain't the problem, it's the amounts... Graph from LAST YEAR!

You're going to hear It Ain't So Bad Now, Cuz It Was Worse In 1991! Right.

See, in 1991, we only had about $800 bills in CC debt. And we defaulted on 5.3%, or about $42 bill.

Today, we have over $2.6 TRILLION, and we're just getting started on the Default Train.

Look for banks to start folding again on commercial and unsecured (Credit card) debts AGAIN, Green Shoots BE DAMNED.

Finally, we'll see in HIGH RELIEF more of a symbolic failure than anything, this week. Our friend GM itself will die of CARDIAC ARREST.

Same shit, different day: There will be no end to stories of it's RESURRECTION, bigger & BETTER than ever. Nah... AmeriKKKa is still the World's Premier Manufacturing Location!

AMERIKKKHAN WORKER BEST IN WORLD!
"My husband is UAW Proud!"

AmeriKKKHAN workers, namely Union Tubs of Fucking Shit, are the most MINDLESS DUMBFUCKS THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN. Read it again, hbm.

Instead of actually realizing they were ass-fucking what used to be the Worlds Largest Company so fucking hard, that it DIED, these butt-wipes will now be equity partners, and own 17.5% of a BANKRUPT BEHEMOTH.

OK, the math: 17.5% of nothing is... NOTHING!

Right, right... New GM, Bigger, Stronger, Faster, we can rebuild him, yada, yada bullshit.

The fact of the matter is GM, Chrysler, Ford, and a shitload of other PROTON-based manufacturers are less relevant than ever. We've got our panties in a wad over the idea that Indians, Japs, Chinese, and Queersbekistanians could own our auto business, putting us on par with Greenland auto production, or some shit.

Fuck that. GM, if brought back to life, will NEVER EVER again be anything but a bit player. Did you hear the "UNITS REQUIRED FOR MINIMUM SAFE DISTANCE" quoted by the auto industry? It was 11 million units! We're doing 9 mill now!

These fuckers need 11 million units to even EAT, and that figure might as well be 10 billion, cuz we'll never hit it.

Ohhhh, GM is going to declare Chap 11. AT LEAST TWICE. This motherfucker is going to be like a Weekend At Bernies. The whole US manufacturing base is slowly going to erode away.

So RE isn't even close to being over. There has yet to be the aftershock of CC defaults. And US manufacturing is just going to die.

What's the "New Normal?".... it's a whole lot skinnier than it was.
I know you love my huge titties, AMERIKKKA!

Without buyers, high-end condos in Bend turn to summer tourists

By Jeff McDonald / The Bulletin
Published: May 31. 2009 4:00AM PST

Many of Bend’s high-end condominiums — some marketed for more than $1 million — will be occupied this summer, though not in the way their owners originally intended.

Instead of the condos selling at prices that might have been obtainable during the housing boom, many of the condos haven’t sold since going on the market and are being converted into vacation rentals.

...

“Nobody can meet their original real estate goals,” Dyer said, noting the owners’ desire to sell the properties. “The opportunity lies in renting. It will provide income to the owner and maybe make a second-home investment.”

While the Bend real estate market remains active in lower price ranges, upper-end property sales have been stagnant. There’s currently a 79-month inventory for homes priced at $500,000 or more, according to The Garner Group of Bend.

The owners of three Deschutes Landing townhomes near the Deschutes River in The Old Mill District had tried to sell them for about a year with no luck, then put them on the rental market six months ago to generate income and take advantage of Bend’s attractiveness as a tourism destination, said Scott Houck, a partner in Deschutes Landing LLC. The three units are mostly booked full for the summer, when demand peaks, he said.

CHARACTER LIMIT REACHED. FUCKERS.

IHateToBurstYourBubble said...

Visitors who will stay in pricier overnight accommodations in the city include a couple from New York City who have already visited three times in the last year, Dyer said.

A woman has stayed at the Mill Quarter property twice and is coming back this summer for the month of August with her two daughters, Dyer said. And a Florida couple that is planning to stay at the 919 Bond building wanted to be downtown, she said.

"Dude, and my friend Darla, knows this guy whose girlfriends brothers friend is TOTALLY going to stay there..."

From MILLION DOLLAR PROPERTIES to RENTAL SHITHOLES.

Yes, this is GREAT NEWS.

Bend’s tourism scene, which has struggled over the winter with a double-digit drop in room-tax collections, will benefit from higher-end condos on the market, said Doug La Placa, president and CEO of Visit Bend, which markets tourism for the city.

"SCENE"? Oh Jeebus H Christmas. Bend's tourist SCENE.

Go back to Cali, you deadbang Hummer fuck.

SCENE, my fat cottage cheese fucking ass.

At the 919 Bond building, the four-story structure on Bond Street that includes the ground-floor restaurant Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails, The Loft of Bend social and wine club, and four top-floor condominiums, visitors can rent a 2,240-square-foot, two-bedroom penthouse condo on the top floor that includes rooftop views and access to The Loft.

I can't believe they won't even mention The HIGHLIGHT of The Loft is Drew Bledsoe will jerkoff a gallon of donkey cum onto Hollern & Costa's face every night!

Yeah... nothing turns on buyers like having a million dollar condo occupied by Cletus, the DRW Wonder Fuck, married to his 3 fucking sisters who done plotzed out 16 humpback whale fucking kids who shit, piss and puke all over the fucking place.

Good call.

Talk about DENIAL... last week the market pushed GM to $2 on hopes that by some freakin MIRACLE, it would just RIGHT ITSELF, and all would be OK.

Course, GM fell almost 2/3rds in 5 days on the stark reality that BK is inevitable.

Glad to see you're back in shape, Butter. You got me giggling again.

All these numbnuts must have their heads up their asses to think of any recovery when the bottom is still so far away. DOW 5000 is closer to the bottom and will be when I think the ride down has ended. As far as recovery, well compared to where we are going, we are the better off right now, than what we will be at the bottom.. Enjoy the Best of Times right now.

While I understand wanting to rent out your house/condo if you can't sell it...so does everyone else. Ain't enough tourons to go around. Bend is not Kauai, you'd be lucky to rent out your Bend property 10 times a year....very very lucky.

I am sure that the hotel owners are super stoked on Visit Bend and the Bull right about now.

Bend is going to be like Detroit,Toledo, Dayton, and other rust belt cities. People will stay here, hoping for some miracle, while jobs and businesses leave.
If you stay here, you are doomed to live in poverty.

Anonymous said...

So far it's 103 sold @ $220k median. A few more over $500k sold. Like one on Calgary that was listed for 2 years, starting at $1,299,000 and sold Friday for $565,000, now that's a spankin! The high end is over 1/2 off and will pull in a few suckers that think the bottom is in. Next year they will be underwater though.
Sometime next week, after all the sales are reported, I'll have more final numbers.

I've been skimming this blog for a couple months now, waiting to see if it ever rose to the level of "reasonably informative" and it just never quite gets there. Which is too bad, because I'm pretty sure you have an interesting perspective on what's happening here in Bend. Unfortunately if you do, it's so buried in vitriolic B.S. that it's increasingly clear it's not worth the effort of filtering out the unnecessary profanity, the crazed rants, and the unceasing negativity.

This post is a better example than most of that. The rant on how Larsen's death was handled by BB is unfounded and in bad taste. "Probably a good guy"? Come on, from everthing I've heard he was unanimously admired. To imply otherwise without evidence to the contrary is just dickish. And for them to say the cause of his heart failure is unknown is perfectly valid reporting, and you know it. Thus, your comments come across as nothing more than a desperate search for somewhere to grind your ax.

Anyhow, hope this encourages you to raise the level of discourse a bit, but I'm not holding my breath.

(P.S. Instead of complaining about how you can't copy/paste entire article worth of text into the comments, just past the link to the article. Not only is it easer to read the article in it's original context, but it avoids de-emphasizing what you have to say by burying it in so much other text.)

Anonymous said...

Broofa,

These are just bathroom walls, if you are not takin a piss, why stay.
Butter didn't know Larsen, so he said the best he can, by saying he was PROBABLY a great guy. That was a compliment.

Bewert said...

There are RE idiots everywhere, even here where unemployment is 1/3 of Bend's:

http://tinyurl.com/snadyut-reidiotcouncilman

"City Councilman Chris McCandless said that although the city’s new plan to stimulate the economy through real estate centers more on new homes, it shouldn’t have much of an impact on existing houses for sale."

"According to Community Development Director Mike Coulam, only six new single family home building permits have been issued this year. Although the year is not over, the number could be considerably less than the 40 permits that were issued in 2008 and 107 that were issued in 2007.

“This could be because of several reasons,” Coulam said. “It’s hard to know if the economy is driving the number down or if it’s because there isn’t a lot of land left to develop into single-family homes.”

The plan, which McCandless hopes will appeal to builders that are desperate to get working again, is simple.

New permits issued before the end of the year (or when the City Council decides to end the program) would be offered at half the normal price, which can range from $8,000 to $12,000 depending on the size of the home."

Costa would be proud. Of course, this is a local rag below the level of the Source...

No one wants to speak ill of the dead. I didn't know Steve Larsen, but he seems to have been liked and respected.

But I noticed that HBM had a blog up, that was removed about the subject.

From what's he's said here, I'm betting he pointed out that this might have been an avoidable outcome.

If you have swollen legs and shortness of breath, going on a vigorous exercise campaign would seem rather dubious.

Exercise addiction?

It even works, as Paul-doh mentions, as a metaphor for Bend.

Sometimes you need to slow down, dammit, and not build bigger and better and stronger and more grandiose muscles, buildings, stores, whatever....

Or...it was just an accident and tragic and had no greater meaning.

hbm said...

"Instead of actually realizing they were ass-fucking what used to be the Worlds Largest Company so fucking hard, that it DIED,"

Of course 40 years of bad management decisions had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, did it, Homie? Bad decisions like poor design, poor quality control, continuing to build gas-guzzling behemoths long after the market had turned away from them, fighting tooth and nail against every single effort to raise mileage standards and add safety features like air bags and even seat belts ... no, all that had NOTHING to do with Detroit's downfall. It was all the fault of those greedy EEEEEEEE-vul unions.

hbm said...

"But I noticed that HBM had a blog up, that was removed about the subject."

Yes, I did put a post up. Aaron took it down; he thought it was insensitive to the family.

"From what's he's said here, I'm betting he pointed out that this might have been an avoidable outcome."

That's right. Larsen had shortness of breath and swelling of the legs -- two classic symptoms of heart failure. He kept up a rigorous training schedule anyway.

I believe people -- athletes or non-athletes -- need to learn to recognize the symptoms of serious illness and get medical attention promptly instead of trying to ignore them and tough it out. And I think it would be a public service for the news media to say this. But I guess that wouldn't be considered "nice," so they won't.

Bewert said...

I agree with HBM, Butter--putting our auto industry problem completely on the backs of the UAW is missing the point that maybe, just maybe, even Americans appreciate high quality cars that get decent gas mileage. And it wasn't the UAW that designed the fat loser cars they built.

Those UAW folks you piss on so hard built loser fat Buicks so well they tied Lexus for #1 in quality in 2004 and most recently knocked Lexus off the top spot.

Fucking Buick.

What exactly does it take for a Republican to acknowledge that paying manufacturing workers a family-level wage is good for America?

Someday before I die I might even understand why even the foreign brands keep making a good little car larger and heavier with each new iteration. The Toyota RAV4 being a good example.

On the subject of Steve L., note that he was self-employed, so insurance may have been an issue in seeking treatment. If you have a large deductible, or no insurance at all, seeking treatment is often put off if possible. Our health care system is good at letting people die unless they work for a big corp or are independently wealthy.

tim said...

>>Exercise addiction?

I don't know. I gotta think ten times as many people die from not exercising enough than from exercising too much. Don't think it makes sense to let people off the hook by telling them exercise is scary.

This is basically the Jim Fixx story all over again, where the death of an athlete running is news, and the death of some fat ass on the toilet doesn't make news unless he's Elvis.

And it's not really about exercise addiction... I agree with tim, a 1,000X more fat-asses die without it than OF it.

It's about the almost panic-stricken approach of the Bully's reporting on it. Read the piece. It's written by someone in a catatonic fit.

This is nothing but an obit/press release....

Can you call a depreciating asset an investment?

As I have stated a couple times in the last week. There are a fare number of people who think the uptick is just around the corner. Touronism is way off and somehow this idea will turn your epic loss into a long term investment?

I love it here in Central Oregon and tourism has always been a big part of our economy. It will not save you from your bad investment...

Buster here,

Checking in boyz, too busy these days getting back to Thai-Malay, .. plan to be back in by July, and I have to wrap work here in June.

What the fuck bitches ask me a fucking question. Glad to see the hold folks holding ground around the rock.

Hell yes, I agree, I bike & hike everyday, but when I'm broken I stop, when I'm tired I stop, when I'm fucked up I stop.

These 'athletes' who keep running when they have the fucking SYMPTOMS, yes HBM hit it on the nail, and I concur with timmy, the ALT is what?

I know for myself if I didn't bike all day, then thai-malay no love buster, and buster no fuck 8+ hrs a day, so I exercise but in moderation.

Here's the thing FUCK-HEADS, Larsen was a compulsive pure BEND with big-tits, he's a poster boy for excess. Just like Alan Watts was years ago for SmithRock climb, today he's an arthritic pain of a main, why pray tell, cuz he destroyed his body.

I'm 65 and all my thai girls tell their parents I'm 40, and they don't believe I'm that old. Hell I'm older than most their fathers, but years of heavy drinking fucks them.

Moderation, for all MY talk about beer on this blog, I limit myself to 1-2 beers ever couple days, in Thai-Malay I limit my self to one beer with the boyz at 8pm, cuz if I not give PON 12 orgasm a day, then she find another man.

My fucking comment on exercise, moderation folks.

Now I go hiking, ....

Here's the real gist, everything BUSTER predicted has come fold, ...

Now the next step, are fuck-heads ready?

All houses will rent for $750 no matter how nice, and all apartments for $500/mo no matter how nice,

I'll hold my breath for the BULL to explain how that will pencil for those who bought top of market.

Like I have said all along, I rent houses, and they're all paid for, and even at $500/mo, my income will flow, so I simply don't give a fuck.

bye, .. got to go hiking

When I heard that he had shortness of breath and swelling of the legs, I thought heart failure. I would have been knocking down the door at the doctor's office. Larsen though was used to pushing his body beyond points that we would ever consider and perhaps his ability to keep pushing and not knowing when to back off is what ended it for him. He was probably also no longer under the eye of anyone like a coach who could have strongly urged him to get seen sooner than later. I get the testing too...he was a young guy, super fit, has one young son who's a hard charging athelete...you'd want to know if there's something genetic.

As for Bend...we're fucked.

You can't build a city out of the tiny fraction of people in the world who are Olympic Athletes. Nike didn't go Fortune 500 by selling shoes to athletes. They went hyperbolic when they sold shoes to sweaty kids who can't run across a gym. You can't build a tourism industry out of the simple fact that you build too many McMansions.

Bend never comes up with any real solutions. The solutions are always wishful thinking.

I think a large chunk of those who are leaving have RE/development related jobs. Not everyone but that will make up at least 50% of the people who leave.

Fewer jobs period, no doubt about it.

Butter, that story is disgusting:

An American woman's body had became attached to her boyfriend's toilet after she sat on it for two years, police in Kansas said.

"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," said Bryan Whipple, the sheriff of Ness County.

It appeared Pam Babcock's skin had grown around the toilet seat, he added. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."

The 35-year-old initially refused emergency medical care but her boyfriend, 36, and police officers finally convinced her to go to hospital.

"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Mr Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."

Hey7 idiot, why no mention of unions? The public worker unions have health care benefits that cost taxpayers $12,800 per year.
A school bus driver making $24K per year also get 50% additional in health insurance. And then get into the glorified PERS issue.

Change it to: "unless they work for a big corp or are independently wealthy, or are a union thug."

Please back up your assertions with facts.

Good point on public employees actually having health insurance, though. But you really think the cost is any lower for a big corp than for a public employee.

Our costs are way out of line compared to the rest of the world, and we don't even rank in the top 30 in outcomes. That's fucked up, period.

Why? Because we pay for-profit bureaucrats to deny us coverage, if we can even afford insurance in the first place.

Ran into a guy that works for U-Haul this AM. Friday was a huge day for them. Most leaving town, some moving out of a foreclosed rental into another rental. Crazy though, he said there are a few in bound also, not many, but some. He wondered why anyone would move to Bend now. Must be left over PR. I gave him my # and asked if he would call about June outbounds. I will be sure to followup on this. The Bull won't.

From the Oregonian:

SALEM -- Thousands of state workers are gearing up to fight pink slips, holidays without pay and a salary freeze over the next two years.

But unlike many in the private sector or public workers in other states, government employees in Oregon won't have to sweat potential cuts to their taxpayer-subsidized health insurance.

Oregon remains one of the most generous states in the country when it comes to health care. Full-time state employees pay no deductible for medical care and nothing in monthly insurance premiums for themselves or their spouses and children.

The average cost per employee? About $12,800 a year, or roughly half a billion dollars out of a projected $15 billion two-year general fund and lottery budget."

Anonymous said...

"But you really think the cost is any lower for a big corp than for a public employee. "

Yes, it is lower for a big corp, because they make their employees pay part of the monthly premiums. State workers don't have to pay anything, and that won't change any time soon, with Gov Nesbit in charge. (Can't touch this!, see the article for details).

Anonymous said...

"Very similar to the fat lady in todays Butter photo fest."

Umm, nothing is similar to that fat lady. Well except maybe the lady glued to her toilet seat. Isn't it amazing that with all the interesting things to talk about in today's world, we talk about fat people glued to toilet seats? Anthropologists from the nearest solar system -- surveying an empty earth 500 years from now -- will have a heyday trying to understand that one.

@Marge, re: "These are just bathroom walls, if you are not takin a piss, why stay?"

Trust me, it's not for the porn or profanity - those I can get in far better quality and quantity at 1000's of other sites. What I can't get elsewhere are the subversive opinions on Central Oregon politics and culture. There are some smart people here, who have a familiarity and history with Bend well beyond my own. It's those viewpoints that make this an interesting forum. Unfortunately they're so covered in excrement it's like pearl diving in a septic tank.

Take this post for example. I'm genuinely interested in finding out more about how Costa and the Bulletin may be biased. I suspect there are plenty of examples. But is Larsen's death one of them? For Butter to say the press coverage here is solely attributable to how it threatens the Bend PR machine is flimsy at best. The guy was a well-respected Realtor, Athlete, and Family Man - the "Bend Hat Trick" at its finest. Add in his death at an inexplicably young age, contrary to all our notions of the health benefits of diet and exercise, and how else could they cover it? "Local Athlete's Death Proves Being Healthy Not Good For You"? "Steve Larson: You Just Think You Like Him"? "Poor Housing Market Causes Realtor To Collapse"?

Bottom line: Butter is grasping at straws here. Which doesn't bother me unless it involves dancing on the grave of a guy who leaves behind a wife and 5 kids. For Butter to say, "Probably a good guy" and "I feel very bad for his family," in one breath and then dismiss everything being said about him as PR rhetoric in the next, and to call him the Poster Child for the Mad Pursuit of Exercise Excess is astoundingly disingenuous. If you have issues with his lifestyle, quit pretending to respect the guy. If you think everything being said about him is B.S., give me some reason to believe that. But don't expect a bunch of four-letter words and nudie-pics to act as compelling evidence.

Wrapping a discussion in profanity and porn doesn't mean it's not a discussion worth having. In fact, it's fine up to a point. But when it blinds you to the quality of your arguments than you need to think twice about it. In it's own perverse way, this site discusses important issues, which is why it's not the bathroom wall you think it is.

Will any of this change things? Nah, of course not; you're all a bunch of crusty old farts set in your ways. But having your hide pinned to the wall for B.S. rhetoric like this might help keep you honest. ;-)

@Duncan, Re: Posting anonymously - yeah, you're probably right. That's just never been my style. Too late now!

Oh noes, photos of fat and thin people. Why that's clearly worse than buying up houses all over town you can't pay for, and having you property management company still trying to rent them out on CL even after they're in foreclosure. I'm sure the renters who have been kicked out of Sawyer properties would be much more upset by the BB2 photos.

Sawyers knew their house of cards was going to collapse and acted like it wasn't, more of the fake everything is always great in Bend BS that people try to spread everywhere else. That's why I read BB2 and follow the comments through the week - you don't get any of that here. Sure, some people are a little too far on the negative side, but there's some others who balance that - and even they don't sugar coat anything.

I've never hid the fact that I'm a cali transplant, but the kind of cali transplant that would be offended by the fairly tame pictures in the post is the type of person I wanted to move the fuck away from. Hopefully a bunch of people do pack up and leave once school is out - there's clearly a lot of people who can't handle where Bend might be headed over the next 5-10 years. Might as well get out now so the rest of us don't have to listen to your fucking whining about everything.

Larsen was big news before he moved to Bend the first time in the mid 90s. He had already been road bike racing in Europe for the Motorola team after winning lots as a junior and racing at worlds.

Larsen's media coverage locally was chump change compared to the press coverage he received elsewhere. Don't fool yourself. There was more coverage of Larsen in Velonews and Inside Triathalon then there ever was in the Bull or the Sore. His drive had nothing to do with being local top dog, end everything to do with being national top dog.

HomerButter, good point about DEBT being what eventually kills a company -- the death only coming once the tide goes out and we see who's swimming naked (is that too many metaphors). Anyway, this basic idea can be expanded up to the nation as a whole -- to private household debt. Americans' massive personal debt was fine as long as housing prices and the stock market were high . . . .

Paul Krugman: Reagan Did It: Reagan... essentially ended New Deal restrictions on mortgage lending... that, in particular, limited the ability of families to buy homes without putting a significant amount of money down. These restrictions were put in place in the 1930s by political leaders who had just experienced a terrible financial crisis, and were trying to prevent another. But by 1980 the memory of the Depression had faded. Government, declared Reagan, is the problem, not the solution; the magic of the marketplace must be set free. And so the precautionary rules were scrapped.... We weren’t always a nation of big debts and low savings: in the 1970s Americans saved almost 10 percent of their income...

It was only after the Reagan deregulation that thrift gradually disappeared..., culminating in the near-zero savings rate ... on the eve of the great crisis.... All this, we were assured, was a good thing: sure, Americans were piling up debt... but their finances looked fine once you took into account the rising values of their houses and their stock portfolios. Oops. Now, the proximate causes of today’s economic crisis lie in events that took place long after Reagan... — in the global savings glut... and in the giant housing bubble that savings glut helped inflate. But it was the explosion of debt over the previous quarter-century that made the U.S. economy so vulnerable. Overstretched borrowers were bound to start defaulting in large numbers once the housing bubble burst and unemployment began to rise.

These defaults in turn wreaked havoc with a financial system that — also mainly thanks to Reagan-era deregulation — took on too much risk with too little capital. There’s plenty of blame to go around... But the prime villains behind the mess we’re in were Reagan and his circle of advisers — men who forgot the lessons of America’s last great financial crisis, and condemned the rest of us to repeat it...

SLOW news day for the regionally embarrassing Bulletin.

Apparently.

I dropped my subscription today after 5 years of declining bullshit. I kept the e-edition -- for humor. For now.

Top Headline on e-edition and paper editions, AND the BUSINESS section: "Warm Springs Seeks Wild Horses Remedy"

On the same day GM goes down: "GM, A Symbol of America in Motion, Now Humbled". Leveling 10s of thousands of white and blue collar jobs, probably 3-10 times MORE secondary DEALER and SUPPLIER jobs. Taxpayers own a big part of the tanked company (thank you, apocalyptic BaRARrkO. Slap. Can I have another? ... SLAP. CAN I HAVE ANOTHER?).

TONTO and horses have 80% of the front page real estate. GM garnered ~ 2" of 3 point font at the very bottom under the horses& Mt. Jefferson photoSNOBBED picture. GM didn't even make the front page of the e-edition.

Who the fuck cares about wild horses in Warm Springs??? Apparently 916 (916 hits) gluesniffers ("hey, more glue? Count me in. Duuude!), gay artists, ferral cat lovers, and mutant-owl huggers.

6 - SIX - found the GM article in the e-edition. Six.
...this is not news out here in the wild west dental equivalent of West VIRGINia? Nope.

...no local or regional impact on car dealers, suppliers, unions, retirees, GM car owners? Nope.

916. 6. Homer, Dunc, please enlighten us.

Oh, also noticed an ENTIRE section dedicated to pets and Give Me A Few GERBILS to sick in my gay ASS (Conan Obrien). And "Playing Nice in the Parks"...now THAT's news...perhaps for lisping Calibanging men, and their 30% silicon, 30% leatherskin, and 40% ditz wife with dogs to sniff other dogs asses and genitals within confined fence at Old Mill. Groovy.

Sports? "Fast times at RIDGEMONT-Summit HIGH". At least show some tittie, if you use a title like that.

Now, back to those big dick horses...

Surely someone will start a blog for unsensored debates about this once-in-a-century generation-altering event. WH2, HBM?

The evidence is here and your denial is beginning to look like " Now is the best time to by in 20 years"

Hey NewAge Fucker:

I just watched that video. You're right and Gregg Braden is a genius. The Mayan calendar is going to predict what the fuck happens in Bendover, OR. in the first part of the 21st century. Planets and cycles and Bullshit.

I met Gregg at a Dead show one time in the early eighties. Dude was fucked up on about 20 hits of acid and he was sucking down nitrous balloons like they were going outta style.

Can you say WHACK JOB?

WOW,
What a huge day for local/national news. Nothing happening here. How would you spell the kinda snorting/snuffing noise one can make in their nose? Not a hawk-luy..but the other one.
Sold stats for May = 115 sold @ $220k up 10+% over April . Must be in for a rebound in RE. RE always goes up, right?
Alt-A's are going to haunt us for the next 3 years. Interest rates are going up for the unforseeable (sp)future. The T-bill spreads are going to kill thte dollar and interest rates. Good charts on Calculated Risk for interest rates since 1948.. Man, those 80's, which I remember, were killers at 18%. How did we survive? How will we survuve this?

WOW,

And here with your NWX report.

There are currently 60 residences for sale, with 16 of them as townhomes. This is average as much of the last year has seen between 54 and 65 for sale.

There have been 18 NODs filed within the last year. This is a little under the average of NODs/house in the county.

They keep fucking building. This is one part of town that foundations are still being poured and walls are still going up. Most are spec homes, and I can't comprehend how it makes sense to keep doing it. Take a drive over on the east end of Sacagawea or Dorian Way and be amazed. Even as for sale signs line the street and people who have owned for only 9 months put their houses back on the market, the ants keep building.

Two moving trucks within a block of me on Sunday's dog walk.

I spent some time with the PDF of April sales and compared sale prices to the past and it seems like NWX prices were still hovering at around mid 2005 pricing while most areas are back to early 2004/late 2003 prices. I saw one house (I believe SW part of town) that sold for the exact amount it sold for in Sept 2001.

So prices up here don't seem to be crashing as quickly as much of the rest of town, which surprises me being that it is a subdivision that was built out completely during the boom and knowing that we are quickly heading back to pre-boom pricing.

I was thinking that maybe, just maybe I should refinance (currently 5.625%, 20 year) but now it looks like I missed the window -- rates are going up again.

Any recommendations out there? Not sure how many percentage points drop you need to justify the fee (and hassle) of refinancing.

You missed the window, what the hell would you refi for less than 1%..BETTER 2%. Not going to happen anytime soon. Sorry. Too many people got used to refi's for dough. Now the one and only reason would be to cut 2% or more off your payments. If not that you are wasting a lot of money.

Thanks Marge for responding. I guess you're right. I have a friend who had a significantly higher rate and he re-financed into something below 5% apparently -- got a great deal (I guess - I don't know how much he paid in fees).

In Prineville, discussions of a convention center

Business leaders looking for ways to stimulate area’s distressed economy

Crook County and Prineville business leaders are considering building a convention and community center that they say would stimulate local business and help a natural resources-based economy hit hard by the recession.

Their plans, which have not been finalized, are to build a $3 million, 18,000- to 19,000-square-foot community and convention center within the next two years....

Standard mindset for the 80's -- 90's -- 2000's... LET'S SPEND OUR WAY OUTTA THIS THING

Not gonna work. STOP SPENDING. Start saving. Start growing shit to eat, not building edifices in which to eat it. This "convention center" sounds like a boondoggle...

Hunker down, Prineville! Spend in the next boom, if you ever get one.

Yes, but what the fuck do you expect of a tri-county ARENA OWNED by construction/RE???

They're going to keep stealing tax dollars, and porking out the debt until BK, ... they don't give fuck, ...

Cuz if they don't create projects tomorrow, the bigs boyz fold, like Knife-River, ... sitting on M'$$ of bucks a month least equipment costs, ... got to create boon-doggle projects and quick ...

Other wise our TriCounty cesspool is going to get new owners, ... WTF next time it might be the citizenry.

Until then don't ASK any of us for any fucking SYMPATHY or COMFORT or COMPASSION.

The BIG BOYZ are going down and hard.

Cessna warns of further cuts

by Associated Press
Thursday June 04, 2009, 1:05 PM

WICHITA, Kan. -- Cessna Aircraft Co., the nation's largest builder of corporate jets, is planning another round of layoffs and possibly more furloughs, the company said Thursday.

CEO Jack Pelton sent an e-mail to employees warning them of the coming cuts in the work force and production, but he did not say how many workers will lose their jobs.

"Order cancelations have not stopped. The market for new aircraft remains frozen as customers wait to see if the recovery forecasted comes to fruition," according to Pelton's letter, which was posted on The Wichita Eagle's Web site.

The impending job losses would come on top of the 6,900 layoffs since November. That includes Cessna's announcement in April that it was laying off 2,300 workers across the company and closing its Bend plant as it tries to restructure its product line amid declining plane orders. ...

U.S. unemployment hits record but job losses slow

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. employers cut 345,000 jobs last month, the fewest since September and far less than forecast, according to a government report on Friday that was the most definitive evidence the economy's severe weakness was diminishing.

However, the Labor Department said the unemployment rate raced to 9.4 percent, the highest since a matching rate in July 1983, from 8.9 percent in April. This reading beat the peak in the jobless rate during the 1973-1975 recession that lasted 16 months.

But it was both a surge in new labor force entrants and a drop in employment that pushed the jobless rate up a half-percentage point. The May report showed a jump of 350,00 in the labor force. In April, the increase was just 120,000....

I'm sick about carradine getting hung in his room by balls, neck, and dick. Just two weeks ago I was in that hotel. I love the BKK police, every fucking day a tourist is found dead. Always labeled a suicide. This time someone famous, it should be interesting if they pull this off.

Hey, folks at the very least at least BKK comes out and announces questionable deaths, ... in Bend they remain a secret forever.

I'm going to miss 'kill bill', he a fucking role model.

Lastly, I repeat again, every fucking day tourist jump off balcony's in BKK, and never a fucking word. Hum...........

The essential question, is what is the difference between BKK/COP omerta, and Bend/RE omerta??

it sounds like carradine was having a little too much "fun" -- things got a little over the top for an old guy like him.

Bend's peak sales of houses was in 2006, with like a gazzulion sold each month. Now the sales are like a few dozen.

BB2 blog's peak activity was in 2008, with like 600-900++ comments each week. Now the comments are barely over 100.

Bend's Real Estate mirrors BB2, or vice versa. They both are sucking wind; their glory days are long past.
