HUMMEL RESIGNS: CITIZENS REJOICE

6-year Bend councilor John Hummel resigns

In what has got to be the best news for this town in awhile, John Hummel is stepping down as a Bend City counselor. From the Bulletin article:

In John Hummel's six years on the Bend City Council, he earned a reputation for supporting the disenfranchised. Now he plans to leave Bend, and the United States, to help fight Third World poverty.

On Wednesday, Hummel resigned.

Hummel, a 37-year-old defense attorney, said he decided to change careers after watching world events unfold, post-Sept. 11, 2001. He concluded that poverty and terrorism were interconnected and that he could do the most good by attacking poverty at its source. So he's going back to school to become an international development consultant.

"We can use our military might to change minds, that's a philosophy that's out there. I think it's a wrong philosophy," said Hummel, in an interview Wednesday at Bend Brewing Co.

This man is a self-aggrandizing lawyer moron who has cost this town MILLIONS. He voted FOR the pieces of crap trolling our city streets he calls BUSES. These lemons, which don't run half the time, are the fault of Hummel and all other City counselors. Some counselors, like Mark Capell, wanted to do the right thing and own up to it. Hummel, a lawyer, wanted to sue. It's BUYER BEWARE, and Hummel, instead of wanting to own up to a huge financial boner, wants to sue the other guy.

Hummel defended his vote in favor of condemning the Juniper Utility Co., even though the decision will likely cost the city more than $9 million, but admitted he made mistakes on the council.

OK, this guy has cost us MILLIONS, and he DEFENDS it.

"When everyone else in the room was saying kick out the hot dog vendor, he stood up for this one guy," Merwin Cheney said.

He stood up for a hot-dog vendor, and he's a hero?

Hummel began considering a career change six months ago and settled on international business three months later.

Let's review: He's cost us MILLIONS. His solution to EVERYTHING is litigation. He wanted to keep the booming hot-dog industry alive. He's GOING INTO INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS. God help whoever hires this lunatic.

he decided to change careers after watching world events unfold, post-Sept. 11, 2001. He concluded that poverty and terrorism were interconnected and that he could do the most good by attacking poverty at its source.

WHAT? This is the biggest self-serving load of tripe I've ever heard. "Attacking poverty at its source"? Huh? By becoming a Bend City counselor? By upholding the rights of a hot-dog vendor? How about the rights of Mountain High's developer? Yeah, that one cost the good citizens of Bend NINE MILLION DOLLARS! Attacking poverty at its source, my ASS!

Before he leaves, though, Hummel said, he plans to squeeze out every drop of Bend living he has left.

You tell me that doesn't sound JUST LIKE A LAWYER? This mans only good deed is Quitting. For that, we owe him thanks.

More like "Causing poverty at its source!".

I notice you call for Hummel to "get thrown out of office" a little farther down this page. Good call.

Bend councilors say it's time to sue broker of BAT buses: this article points out the incentuous love-hate relationship the Bulletin has with the Bend City Council.

Hummel called the editorials “yellow journalism” and advocated giving the paper “the finger.”

Yet in todays Bulletin article, Hummel is portrayed as some sort of heroic savior. Is that "yellow journalism" John? Go figure.

Whatever. Many cities run their own utilities far more cost-effectively than PGEnron. You all can stew in your own "conservative" juices.

What just makes me want to vomit in my mouth is when some selfish greedy scumbag lawyer claims to be a champion of the poor, as they get into their Lexus.

My God what bullshit.

Huh? I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. It was a FREAKIN GOLF COURSE IRRIGATION SYSTEM Hummel condemned.

Come back when you have the slightest clue about... anything.

Maybe he can make some poor third worlders rich enough to move to Bend. That would help our Realtors and builders, at least.

Hilarious read, thanks Bubble Guy.

Not if the seller has rolled back the odometers. That's a crime.

I suspect you have a grudge against Hummel and it has nothing to do with buses.

You need to figure out the difference between the editorial page and the news pages.

"when some selfish greedy scumbag lawyer claims to be a champion of the poor, as they get into their Lexus."

I've seen what Hummel drives, and it ain't a Lexus. You must have him confused with Neil Bryant, the developers' lawyer.

And do I detect the slightest note of class envy here?

Wrong, Clueless. Juniper Utility provided water to a bunch of Jan Ward developments including Mountain High and Tillicum Village.

And Hummel acting solo didn't, and couldn't, condemn anything.

Are you Jan War's flack or something?

"How about the rights of Mountain High's developer?"

You mean the poor multimillionaire Jan Ward, arguably the biggest prick in Central Oregon?

Cry me a frickin river.

Let's see how long his house sits on the market when he decides to leave.

Ward cut the water after the city of Bend condemned and confiscated his private water system - the source of water for the course and the neighborhood.

Hey, you're probably right!

I suspect you have a grudge against Hummel and it has nothing to do with buses.

Kool-Aid! Get your Kool-Aid here!
Right, it's a grudge, and has nothing to do with the fact that this moron has cost the city millions by being on Bend City Council. Are you a lawyer? Cuz that's how lawyers justify their miserable existence, by bald-face lying that they are "helping the disenfranchised" (whatever the hell that means), as an excuse to sue whoever they can for whatever they can to line their own pockets. When someone tells you they do what they do for magnanimous reasons out of the goodness of their heart, grab your wallet cuz you're about to get screwed.

Hummel could give a shit about the poor. He's a scumbag lawyer who only cares about himself. I think all lawyers should be flown to Tahiti. Then we should nuke Tahiti.

He should be investigated for kickbacks to his lawyer buddies, which I'll bet $100 happened.

Kool-Aid vendors LOVE to discredit anyone who threatens them with the oldest play in the book:

YOU'VE GOT ULTERIOR MOTIVES!

Right. I don't know Hummel. As a matter of fact, I'm NOT going to get rich if housing goes down. I, like most people here, will probably suffer economically if housing takes a beating. So take your tried and true "ULTERIOR MOTIVE" bullshit and put it in your hair, AND RUB IT.

Kool-Aid vendors and Lawyers... practically the same animal. Cannibalistic dingos.

You really are degrading this forum with your working class hero anti Hummel rant. John rented from a friend. He has no Lexus, in fact, very few belongings. He has always been polite to me, worked hard on council, made some mistakes for sure, but if he was on the take I'd like to know where the money went.

Stick to something you know about. You were doing a good job here until this little vendetta came along.

little vendetta

OK, fine. You seem reasonable and I actually don't like administering personal whippings, and this blog isn't about that. With this, I will quit Hummel bashing:

He (and others on City council) lost the citizens of this town $9,000,000+, and has never once acknowledged that it was a mistake IN ANY WAY. He has, in fact, defended this innane decision. Others have owned up, Hummel never has. Same with the Transit Bus Fiasco. Had he done that, his stock would have skyrocketed in my book.

I like hot-dogs....and Kool-aid. Hot-dogs and Kool-aid is crazy delicious!

Love you Bubble Boy!

IHateToBurstYourBubble said...

OK, just a little Hummel-rant qualifier:

It would also be quasi-defensible if he lost $9MM+ to some sort of decent cause: the homeless, an employer promising to bring in jobs who scammed us on price, or some other situation where it could be argued that someone with the smallest merit or need received the money.

Who's getting this $9MM bonanza? A filthy stinkin rich developer and his trained dog scumbag lawyer! I can't think of two less deserving human beings! Why has Hummel, if he's a true champion of the "disenfranchised", never apologized for this? WHY!

IHateToBurstYourBubble said...

OK, and a qualifier - qualifier:

And its going to irrigate a GOLF COURSE! I mean, my God! We could have changed it into dollar bills, and burned the money to keep bums warm on China Hat road, and it'd be a more noble cause than watering a golf course.

THIS IS THE REAL CLINCHER:

Hummel is a LAWYER. He SHOULD HAVE KNOWN the legal implications of what he was doing. Hell, he should have educated other councilors that the Mtn high decision could come back to bite them on the ass BIG-TIME. HE IS A LAWYER! I hold him accountable above all others because of that fact. HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN that condemning Mtn High could easily become a financial nightmare for this town. And to THIS DAY, he won't admit it was the mistake of his life. And he won't even apologize to the citizens of Bend for this incredible financial loss. Forget that he should have known better, forget all that. AT LEAST apologize for losing the citizens of Bend NINE MILLION DOLLARS! Unbelievable.

OK? Hummel Rant Over.

Yet you call him a "rich scumbag lawyer" and even claim to know what kind of car he has.

I don't know you, but I can tell from your posts that you're just an ignorant flamer.
