MC Hammer vs Bay-Watch-Rock Oh-Uni-Bomber. Advantage: The Hammer

Seems like the topic of interest was the unveiling of the McPAIN ticket.

OK, say what you want about this gal on a personal level, and most of the knee-jerk lib's quickly revealed themselves as such when she was tapped, but it was a masterful strategic choice by the Repug's. They could NOT have made a better choice.

OK, the situation was that Oh-Uni-Bomber was in an almost insurmountable lead, touting change, whatever the hell that means... I guess to lib's it means No More Bush. So then, even McCain jumps on the Change Bandwagon.

See, that's a loser for McCain: He White, he Old, he Repugnant, he More Of The Same. Change does not work for him, no matter what he does. Oh-Uni-Bomber can legitimately tout change, McCain can't.

Then what? Well, of course, Oh-Uni-Bomber tries to shore up his weakness, Experience, by choosing Joe Carpet-Bomber Biden. Oh-Uni-Bomber moves away from Change to a more Centerist ticket.

There are two wonderful chances for the Pug's to take advantage of lib hot-bloodedness, their typical weakness, and why the Re-Pugsters typically kick their ass: Superior Strategic Game Play. First, Repug's have second mover advantage. Two, they know Oh-Uni-Bombers move.

This race is like a sailing race, and the Uni-Bomber's boat looks thusly:
Uni-Bomber sailboat, circa Aug 1, 2008

And here is the McCain ticket:
McCain Garbage Barge, pre-Palin

See, when you're in a sailing race, and you have a huge advantage, you DO NOT try to keep winning, you don't try to GAIN on second place. You HOLD. You MATCH the loser, you match Second Place. You look BACKWARDS, and you do what they do.

Well, when Oh-Uni-Carpet-Bomber looked back, all he saw was McCain flailing around, looking ahead, trying to do what The Bomber was doing. Change was being flogged for all it's worth by both ships. This is Good for The Bomber.

But then the Dem's tried to cover their weaknesses by dragging Angry White Dude onboard, cuz Whitey loves to sail. He also loves to hurl black dudes over the side, but that's another story. So Uni moves centerist, by dragging Carpet-Bomber aboard.

Uni-Bomber stops flogging CHANGE, and goes Old Skool Whitey. Uni, who has been flogging Change from Day 1, moves Away From Change, that which got him here in the first place. Strategically though, this is a game-theory dominant play. He looks backwards, and he see Whitey. He sees Whitey for 250 years. He needs Whitey.

Now, Garbage Barge McCain sees this, more accurately The Strategically Superior Game Playing Repug's see this, and realize The Weakness:

  • They are HOPELESSLY behind.
  • They are sailing in a tub of shit
  • They are flogging Change, but it comes out as Hypocritical Bile
  • Their Captain is a bumbler

Someone, whether it was McCain or not, is debatable, but Someone sees the situation and divines some critical requirements:

  • Uni-Bomber has chosen his Path in the Woods, by moving first. He has chosen The Path MORE Taken.
  • McGarbage CANNOT compete head-to-head, he sails a Waterworld piece of shit.

The Uni-Bomber has made a potential mistake, and abandoned Change. He really had no choice. The question is: Can McGarbage capitalize?

This is EXACTLY where we beat you hbm, every time. The Repug's are a repellent lot, usually have a boring, uninspiring message, and lie like rugs. But the fuckers can analyze a situation, and capitalize in cold, calculating form, almost every time.

For this little scenario to work, McGarbage needed several things:

  • He needed to steal the Change Thunder.
  • He needed LESS of himself on his ticket, and more of the other guy.
  • He needed to Take The Path LESS traveled.
  • He needed to scoop up The Abandoned.

My God, there is no argument he did it in commanding style.

His choice could have been a weak, me-too shot across the Uni-Bomber bow. That would have been The Death Knell. Lieberman? Death knell. No-name Whitey Senator? Game Over. There were a plethora of Bad Choices. And Business As Usual lib's in the same spot probably would have fucked it up.

But Palin was just an inspired choice, and her "delivery" to the AmeriKKKan People was a masterpiece. Even her unveiling could have lost the Race, easily.

The Change Thunder was convincingly torn from Oh-Bomber.

"Change"? Oh-Bomber's NO-CHANGE choice was pushed right back in his face in a mega-stuff.

McCain handlers KNEW that More Old Man Whitey was a dead-bang loser. Hot Young Sexpot was a Hail Mary. Admittedly, like most Hail Mary's, Palin had a hell of a chance of blowing up on McCain.

But her speech was also PERFECT. It was flowery, devoid of detail, dodged issues, and almost certainly full of lies.

But it worked, cuz it grabbed Hilary-voters by the boatload. Women voters will flock to this woman. She is flawed IN ALL THE RIGHT WAYS. And she knew it, and pressed all the right buttons. She scooped up The Abandoned.

McCain took The Path LESS traveled, and believe me, the Road To the White House is almost ALWAYS won by taking The Road More Traveled. Someone figured out that if he followed the Uni-Bomber, he would never win: The Bomber would just look backwards, match the loser, and coast in to an easy victory.

But now he can't look back: McPain has taken a different route & is off the map.

Man, and you could see it in the Oh-Uni-Bombers face after the RNC: he was complainy, backpeddling, listless. In short, his thunder was gone. He looks tired. McPain is fucking on fire.

Again, it does NOT matter who you are for: This thing is a study in Strategic Game Play Mastery. McCain was a hopeless loser, losing ground, bailing water, a sinking garbage barge.

Now? He has singlehandedly ensured this will be a historic election: A woman or a black dude will either be Prez or runner-up. There was almost certainly HUGE pressure to go Old Man Whitey by McCain. Palin was the gutsiest, boldest, Hail-Mary, Road LESS Traveled play out there, and his only real chance, and he took it, despite the fact that it Almost Never Wins the White House.

Now? He's got a chance. Palin brought him to even, plus or minus. She was PERFECT. Again, she is FLAWED in all the right ways. She's Spunky Porno Queen to McCains Grim Reaper Death Mask. She Hot, he ass-ugly. Those two are a dream team.
Vote McPain, and no one gets hurt. And I'll do a pole dance.

They may not win, but before the RNC McCain had ZERO CHANCE. I had NO PROBLEM jumping ship from my Repug-Independent stance, and put McPain back in the race for my vote. Palin brings a HUGE number of alienated Repugs back into the fold. She also appeals to the Lib-strong, Welfare Crowd, with her pro-breeding, unmarried statutorily-raped children.

Retards? Again, what a masterful stroke. Redneck husband? Check.

And top it off that she is a Hot As Hell MILF. Dudes vote for that shit. Check Starz. Better yet, check Marz.

When I watched this woman's speech, I got chills. Why? Was it cuz she was hot & I like The Hotness? Well, in small part, maybe.

No, it was because I KNEW I was watching a hopelessly lopsided blowout, turn into a nail-biter with 2 minutes to go. Palin turns this thing from a boring, business-as-usual crapfest, into something I actually am interested in.

I look at McCain with New Respect. Someone there is on the ball. Someone KNEW what had to be done. Go WAY off the Beaten Path to the White House, and just go into one of those plays where guys lateral the ball 20-30X because they are on the last play of the game, and crazy-ass shit is their only hope. And it is working. And you can see The Whites of The Libs Scared-Ass Eyes.

They had a Sure Thing in Oh-Uni-Bomber, it was a slam dunk. Palin reeled in the disaffected Repugs. She reeled in Hillary Humungous-Mega-Cock Followers. She reeled in The Special Olympics. She reeled in White Trash Welfare Single Mothers with 6 mongoloid illegit children fathered by 19 black dudes. That alone is about half the women in the Midwest.

Again, it was a sight to behold. A gaping maw, an insurmountable lead, a smug presumptive winner, a sullen doomed loser, Game Over. All UNDONE in one night. The lib's quivered under The Hammer Stroke of Palin. You could smell the fear in the comments. McCain went from Inevitable Loser to seeing the whites of their eyes. And the libs quaked in their boots. The Oh-Bomber was visibly rattled.

This thing went from Yawner to a Dog Fight in One Day. Again, it was due to Masterful Strategy by McHammers handlers. They saw a Lost Cause, and pulled a Desperation Hail Mary out of their hat, and it worked. I didn't find a SINGLE WOMAN who was not inextricably drawn to McPalin the next day. They were lib's. They were in Oh-Bombers pocket. Now, they were thinking. God, it was great.

And I know this diatribe will bring out cries of IHTBYB IS A REPUG WHORE. OK. That's fine. But remember I like the Olympics, regardless of country, winner or loser. I like competition, I like a good fight. And McPain brings this thing from 100% Yawner blowout, to Close Call in one shot.

I had 100% intention of going Oh-Bomber. Now? Palin is whackier, weirder, changier, and hotter than anything Oh-Bombers got. He chose angry Carpet-Bomber. Palin's got boobs. Again, a master stroke of Hail Mary game play. I'm thinking again, and last week I was not.

You can gauge the effectiveness of MC Hammer-Pain by the vitriol of the lib's in the comments. They will whine, bitch, moan, and turn into Sullen Turds. Haven't learned a FUCKING THING. Start thinking, you hot-blooded dumbfucks. Repuggers stole your thunder via Superior Strategic Thinking. Start DOING THE SAME. Don't fall into your familiar rut. You emotional fuckers get completely worked up, rubbed into a lather by the Repugs, you can't subdue your Bush-hatred for 5 fucking seconds, and THINK.

But you won't. You'll rant in the comments about my love of Nazi's or some shit, and lose the chance to put your guy in office. We're PLAYING YOU AGAIN. And you'll get played. Cuz we know you better than you do.

Know thyself? Fuck that. Know thy enemy. That's where the Repugs steamroll over the lib's. We play you like the emotional puppets you are.

You're at Even now. And it is Standard Op Procedure for Dem's to start their BITCHING, MOANING, and WHALING at Even. Look Bay-Watch-Rock: He's already STARTING.

Know thy Enemy. Fuck, when the lib's pull their head out & learn that, they'll be unstoppable. Look at the FuckStick that's been in office for nearly a decade. We elected this cocksucker TWICE. Repugs played us like a fiddle. TWICE. Fuck, the Repugs have a leaden anchor in the form of Bush-Whacker, and we are PROBABLY GOING TO WIN THIS THING. AGAIN.

Fuck me. This is like 9/11 all over. We had overwhelming World-wide support & empathy. There was NO COUNTRY on Earth that wasn't "For" the U.S.

Today? Due to BushWhacker, we are the Worlds Pariah. We are Has Beens. We are The Worlds Warmongers. No one feels sorry for the U.S. Even our staunchest allies are on the fence.

We turned an INSURMOUNTABLE LEAD, into a SURE LOSER.

Hello, Bay-Watch-Rock Oh-Uni-Bomber. Same shit, different day. Fuck. The Repugs ain't smart. But they are smarter than you. This is the Lib's 9/11. Fuckers will turn Worldwide support into a cluster fuck.

Pull your fucking heads out. That's you & your kind, hbm. Play it cool, aloof, emotionless, instead of sticking your fucking cocks in the Repug Glory Hole, and wondering why we put dobermans there instead of Starz strippers, like we said we would. Fuck. Wake Up White Peepul.

Lib's: "Gee, I hope there ain't murderous fucking doberman's in there again. But my Repug friend told me there definitely won't be, it'll be strippers this time. Is that Bay-Rock in the white van? It looks like Hillary is fucking him in the ass again with her Humungous Mega Cock. Cool."

Folks, the Dem's could win this fucker, but you watch: Brucey's cries of "McSame!" will start to appeal less than Palin's thong. hbm's cries of "I'm Scared!" will be drowned out by MC Hammers You Can't Touch This. Wash, rinse, and repeat... country-wide.

They will stick their fuckin cocks in the Glory Hole, and wonder why they pull out Chicken Fried Steak. No thinking, just cram'er in there. Dumb fuckers. They need $10K for granny's operation, and Bob Barker is asking if they want to keep the $20K he's handing them... or take what's in the fucking little blue box.

Fuckers ALWAYS choose the little blue box. Like fucking clockwork. Repug's worked them into a lather, and they are already unzipping and walking towards the Glory Hole the second they saw Palin's titties. Pavlovian bitches. You watch.

I'm trying to wake you fuckers up, but you will, as always, take personal affront, and cram'er in the Glory Hole, not thinking a wit.

Think McFly. THINK.
Repugs grab Lib's by the cock and lead them to the Glory Hole.

Dem's remind me of people who troll the parking lot for 20 minutes to get a front row spot, and Bend home sellers who simply refuse to list or sell their home anywhere near market value: These people have forgotten Life's Objective Function.

I LOVE people who do this in a parking lot. They will either wait right near the front row, or block traffic waiting while someone goes through the whole rigmarole of unloading their stuff, and getting ready to drive off, something that can take 15 minutes.

And these fuckers don't give a fuck about the inconvenience they cause others or themselves. They've forgotten what the fuck they are really trying to do: Get in and out of the store with the smallest hassle & time expenditure.

They will wait and wait and wait for a front row spot, but when it comes time to leave the store, they will still make the round trip to drop off their shopping cart at the nearest little cart depot. They make the round trip to one of these things in the end anyway.

That's why I always park on the "edge" of parking lots, as close to a cart dropoff point as possible. I avoid the front row lunatics who clog the center, and I'm going to make a trip to the dropoff anyway, so I just park near one. I do this even when I can get a front row spot, because I feel that all the activity and franticness of front row headbangers increases the chance that my car will be scratched or hit.

Same logic goes for most of Bend's current lot of home sellers: They are going to get MORE than they paid for their house, by God, or they just won't sell. Or they are going to get that 2006 fixated high price they can't let go of. Or some dumb shit. These people have lost sight of Life's Objective Function: Like front row trollers, they believe that extracting Their Price from the World is the best way to achieve their end of maximizing their income or net worth, or whatever.

But they don't take into account the opportunity costs of NOT receiving a sensible sale price. They don't take into account possible lost wages from unemployment here, and compounding that with NOT being able to have a job elsewhere. They don't realize they will maybe NEVER get their unreasonable sale price, and if they just took market prices today, they could invest & have more in 3-5 years. They forget that in a market gone to shit, they MUST take a lower price... AND they will also pay less on whatever they buy next.

And again, Lib's fall into this same trap. They FORGET that beating up the other guy, bitching, moaning, and complaining NEVER will get their guy elected. Bitching about McPain and telling people NOT to vote for him won't get Obama elected.

Remember G Dub II: I mean Bush was loathed by the AmeriKKKan people, and Lib's just harped on the point, thinking that would win them the election. No. They forgot one little thing: Repuggers actually implore people to go out and... wait for it... VOTE FOR THEIR CANDIDATE. I know. A miracle of logic.

Lib's Objective Function always seems to turn to beating up the other guy, while stupid old Whitey Repugs stay on target, and hound their base & borderline Repugnants to actually go VOTE. This is why Lib's always end up in the parking lot, when Repuggers are inside the door.

OK, enough of that.

From marge's blog:

The Notices of Defaults in Deschutes County tops the sales. In August 211 Nod's were filed and there were 188 sales of all types of Residential real estate.

Stats as of 9/2/08 for August 08:

SFR, Bend Sold=89 at a Median price of $278,800
SFR, Bend July Sold=103 at a Median of $289,000

August 07 Sold=145 homes @ $350,000 Med.
August 06 Sold =196 homes @ $377,000 Med.

And you see from the recent National City survey, that at $285K medians, we are still 46% overvalued, the second highest in the country. That's a fair value around $195K.

I remember near the middle of 2007, a fresh-faced, feisty BendBB took my bet that medians would go below $300K by the end of the year, a bet I narrowly lost. But here we are at $280K medians, and we are blithely getting predictions like this:

Anonymous said...We were openly condemned here 2+ years ago when buster & homer said $180k, now we can argue how far below $180k.

tim said...

>>I agree that we will over correct however I don't believe it will go below $150k.

Oh Marge, they will. How can they not?

As I recall, most were fairly dubious of my thinking that we'd sink below the magical $300K mark (no one else took this bet), but what a difference a year makes. I guess you'd expect a lot of people on this blog's comments to have dire predictions of doom, but I am starting to hear this sort of thing out in The World.

I have work acquaintances who are predicting absolute doom in Bend housing. Many times their accompanying remarks include the absolute shameful mismanagement of the City of Bend, and what they think is an inevitable BK by the City. They talk about the $40MM we'll have to spend at Cooley/97, $40 mill we clearly do not have. And they wonder how the hell SoniaCo can make revenue projections that include JR land sales, if we will never finish Cooley/97? And usually either they, or several friends of theirs, are losing their house or going BK.

Seriously. Topics that drew baffled stares a year or two ago are actually being initiated by the general public. They're "informed" all of a sudden. They know about mounting financial issues in this town. And they are fucking pissed. People are starting to unveil the Kool-Aid fueled regime that has run this place for so long, and they are waking up & questioning what the fuck is really going on. They've been told every fucking day for years that Things Are Great, and they now KNOW that is 100% bullshit.

This is a place where the media WANTS you to forget Your Life's Objective Function. OK, it should be something along the lines of "I want to maximize my net worth over time.", or something like that. That's a Financial Objective Function, but you get the idea. Bend media doesn't really give a shit about fucking you over in any other way than financially.

But, stop for just a sec and think about this: Do you remember right after the top & prices were starting to drop a little, and people actually started making BUYING PLANS when medians hit $300K? Or $275K? Or whatever?

Well, we're there. And what's funny is NO ONE is still talking about buying. Everyone is talking about selling & how much lower things will go. And there is a bone in my head that makes me BUY in the stock market when I hear this.

But this ain't stocks. Stocks requires I HAVE MONEY to buy stocks when I get this feeling. This is housing. And for 9 out of 10 people, when they want to buy, someone HAS TO loan them the money, they don't have that much cash lying around.

That's why this is different, that's why this thing will continue to go lower & traditional "contrarian" thinking won't work. It's a deflating bubble, and it'll carry on farther than most people think possible.

And the lenders are going away:

bruce said...

Timmy, what do you think the odds are on Fannie and Freddie making it to Monday? 50/50?

I mean, WTF? Did anyone even think that this would be a sentence that would ever be uttered? The answer is NO. Fannie & Freddie, the object of my last derisive post, are actually going away, make way for UnKKKle Sam. We might wake up one day this week & find these behemoths GONE.

Housing is fucking dead meat. And if housing is dead meat, Bend is fucked. Dead. This place will wipe out BILLIONS & BILLIONS of homeowner net worth in the next decade, and you don't just shrug that off, with no ill-effects.

This place will actually start shrinking. I had occasion over the Summer to travel a bit, and happened across Idaho Falls. Nice place, 50K people or so. Close to the Tetons & Yellowstone. And it was like seeing Bend circa 2015.

Abandoned malls. Everything in a low-grade state of disrepair. You could see the outer-reaches had gone to seed. Close-in, downtown? Still in relatively good shape. Hell, great shape compared to the Circle Of Death that ringed this place. There was just no sign of prosperity, and there seemed no real way to achieve it. People had this look of resignation on their faces. It was pretty depressing.

We're on our way. The gleam will come off of some of our shiny, metal hulks on Colorado Ave after years of vacancy. Public works projects will just be abandoned or left in disrepair. Of course, we'll go broke. Weeds in all corners.

Just as an aside, I went through Forum Meadows yesterday, and there is a hell of a Weed Grow Operation going on there. And it's the bad kind, not The Good. Yeah, the front yard kind that pushes down house values. Forum Meadows is AWASH in abandoned homes. HUGE fucking weeds. There is one in particular that actually is starting to look like a small tree. Seriously, it obscures the entire front of the house, it's HUGE. Go have a look, if only to witness a curiosity born of what has probably been the greatest weed grow conditions you'll see anywhere on Earth.

Anyway, we're on our way to becoming Idaho Falls. And folks, when you're in a town like that, you FULLY UNDERSTAND why their median home prices are $140K or so. There's NOTHING to prop it up. No one makes anything. There's no way to pay for a really nice, expensive house.

Kind of funny, but we have been so shot full of Kool-Aid in this place for so long, that most people have forgotten that INCOMES EQUAL PRICES ultimately. Someone on BendBB uses that in their signature.

Almost EVERYONE I know whose bought a house in the past 4-5 years bought DESPITE the full knowledge that it was TOO EXPENSIVE, and out of their price range. But... remember.... "if you don't buy NOW, you may NEVER be able to afford a house!" Uh huh. I remember that well. And I remember how many people fell for it. That was the rallying cry for almost every single home sold in bend between 2004 and 2007. And that is a shitload of homes.

tim said...

>>I agree that we will over correct however I don't believe it will go below $150k.

Oh Marge, they will. How can they not?

What a difference a year makes. But you think it's bad now? Fuck, this is nothing. Bend still has a nice polish on it. Wait for a few years of deferred maintenance on EVERYTHING. We'll look like a tired old, worn out mountain town in no time. Man, and if you wanna see where there are a shitload of desperate sellers, go into little dinky ass mountain towns. Half the people are broke, the other half are on their way.

Fannie & Freddie gone. 46% overvalued. City on it's way to BK. Billions & BILLIONS of net worth wiped out. 40% vacancy downtown. Mass personal BK's.

We are on our way to being another sad little town. And with incomes like ours, we're on our way to $140K medians.

Yup, we're fucked.

From local Realtor: Fran McCormick

RECENTLY, Bend is experiencing extremely strong buyers market. Prices have turned sharply downwards. The average price of a single family residents is running around 475K. If you are an investor the Short Sale market is a place to pick up rental property or buildable land.

I am always available to asist you at any time on my cell phone at 541-815-5664.I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.

IHTYBB, you need to add this great Palin pic to your post: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_X_d6JjJ00I4/SMEmnmHioDI/AAAAAAAAPZY/2gUCqj3DnJs/s1600-h/sarah-pallin-having-fun+with+her+gun.jpg

Another good one by Prudential

Bend's home price fell 7.15 percent from second quarter 2007 to second quarter 2008, according to a house price index released Tuesday by the office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight.

The area's prices dropped 3.91 percent from the first quarter this year to the second quarter, the report said.
...
There were signs in the report that the pace of the home's values slowed in June.

Wow, really? What were the "signs" that values had SLOWED? Was it the outright decline in prices?

Woman: "Harold, the car seems to have slowed."
Harold: "Marge, I've been going backwards for 10 minutes."
Woman: "Exactly."

My Dear IHTBYB,

Usually you are a Tourette's syndrome, knee-jerking idiot, but this is BRILLIANT and RIGHT ON TARGET!

The Waterworld Garbage Barge...ROTFL!!

Palin gave us chills because she stood up there with her Pit Bull, read-my-lipstick, game face and delivered sarcastic torpedos to the Uni-Bomber starboard bow...torpedos that no one previous had the guts to deliver. It was a history-making political Star Is Born speech.

And I cannot wait to hear HBM and Brucie drop anchors on this. Let's see what wind-bag comments that have to keep their sails up.

Since the first time POWDRZ bought MT-B, they're spending a nickel on maintenance!!! Lip stick on a pig. Anyone want to buy a used ski-lift?

***

A ‘reinvigorated focus’ at Bachelor
The ski area has undertaken an aggressive summer maintenance program to try to prevent problems that have plagued the mountain in recent years.
By Jeff McDonald / The Bulletin
Published: September 07. 2008 4:00AM PST

In the midst of its biggest maintenance overhaul in at least five years, Mt. Bachelor ski area’s new top executive says the changes may not be visible to the public, but should result in better service for the upcoming 2008-09 ski and snowboard season.

That’s expected to be welcome news for people who expressed frustration last season with lift breakdowns and questioned the ski area’s investment in the mountain.

“We’ve got a reinvigorated focus here because of some past issues,” said Dave Rathbun, who took over as president and general manager in June after three seasons as vice president of sales, marketing, reservations and golf at Killington Resort-Pico Mountain in Vermont. “This isn’t sexy stuff that we’re doing — it’s just stuff that needs to be done.”

Mt. Bachelor is spending more this summer on maintenance than in previous years, replacing parts that show any sign of wear, and using more-expensive replacement parts from its original equipment manufacturer, Rathbun said. The effort is necessary to reduce the chances of lift breakdowns this season, he said.

The work includes changing many of the parts on Bachelor’s 10 lifts, installing fiber-optic cables, paving parking lots and replacing wiring and heating systems under heated sidewalks at the ski area’s guest lodges.

“Because of the past circumstances, we’re being more aggressive in the pace and the focus on those parts that tend to wear,” he said.

“If it’s at all a question, we’re changing it this year.” Rathbun said. “That what’s really different.”

The ski area’s parent company, Park City, Utah-based Powdr Corp., invested $3.4 million this summer on capital improvements, including about $2 million for three new snowcats and a new snowblower, and building a new in-town park-and-ride lot, Rathbun said. The lot is adjacent to the former lot at Simpson and Colorado avenues, which was sold.

As part of the $3.4 million investment, Powdr earmarked $500,000 for lift maintenance and repair at the beginning of the season, but the final tally will be more by the end of the season, Rathbun said.

The summer maintenance blitz

The heavy equipment is expected to arrive by the start of the ski and snowboard season.

Throughout the summer, though, maintenance crews have been busily trying to prevent recurrences of lift incidents, delays or shutdowns — possibly caused by a combination of faulty parts and nasty winter weather — that have challenged the ski area the past few seasons. A couple of highly publicized incidents last winter, including a lift shutdown during the busy Christmas holiday season, raised public questions about Mt. Bachelor’s commitment to its lift operations.

“People care about this issue because the success of Mt. Bachelor has enormous importance on Bend both from an economic standpoint and a quality-of-life standpoint,” said Doug La Placa, president and CEO of Visit Bend, which markets tourism for the city. “There’s too much at stake for them to fail.”

La Placa called this summer’s improvements at Bachelor “an extremely encouraging sign.”

Mt. Bachelor started work immediately after the ski and snowboard season ended May 18, replacing all the rollers on the Summit Express chairlift, Rathbun said. The goal is to reduce the variables of things that can go wrong on the lifts next winter, he said.

The ski area has replaced at least 3,000 of the wheels that carry the chairlift through each of the terminals on all of its lifts. The wheels often get worn down by ice, wind and snow, Rathbun said.

The money has been well-spent and part of a shifting management philosophy that is needed to properly maintain lifts over the long haul, said Mark Bee, president of Salt Lake City-based Doppelmayr North America, which sells and services the ski area’s lift equipment.

Mt. Bachelor has spent $460,000 in new lift parts this summer, about four times the amount the ski area has spent with Doppelmayr each of the past five years, Bee said.

“Based on our sales records, there seems to have been a change in philosophy over there,” Bee said.

Doppelmayr has sent a chief technician to Mt. Bachelor twice already this summer — to adjust the terminals and bring everything back to its original design specifications — and will send him out again later this month, Bee said.

The cost of the technician’s visits will be about $35,000, he said.

“It’s, ‘Pay me now or pay me later,’” he said. “If they keep their lifts well-adjusted, they will work better in the long run because the components don’t wear out.”

A proactive approach

In the past, Mt. Bachelor has bought its replacement parts from other manufacturers instead of Doppelmayr to save money, Rathbun said.

Buying from Doppelmayr costs more but could eliminate problems this season, he said.

“We’ve been getting better the last few years, but we keep having these one or two big things that put the question back in people’s minds: ‘What’s going on up there?’” Rathbun said. “My approach is that if we reduce the variables, we’ll get to the root cause of what’s been happening.”

Mt. Bachelor and other ski areas are shifting from a reactive mode where they fix equipment when it is broken to a more proactive mode, Bee said.

If everything is adjusted annually, the equipment will last about 20 years, Bee said. If not, it could wear out in five years.

“These are kind of normal maintenance things that need to be done annually,” Bee said. “Within the industry, people are realizing how critical it is to make adjustments. This isn’t just related to Bachelor. Things will run better if the terminal is adjusted.”

A chief source of Mt. Bachelor’s lift challenges is a perennial Northwest nemesis: rime ice.

The ice affects mountains such as Mount Bachelor in maritime climates at higher elevations where frozen fog, sometimes more than a foot thick, clings to lift equipment and can delay lift openings.

The ski area plans to tackle rime ice next season by hiring five additional maintenance employees who will split into two crews and open the chairlifts on the west side of the mountain — Outback Express and Northwest Express — starting the lifts the night before if necessary and running them overnight so they are ready to go in the morning, Rathbun said.

However, the ski area’s detachable lifts, including Outback and Northwest, are among the oldest of Powdr’s six ski areas and need continuous adjustment, Bee said.

One of the oldest lifts at the ski area, Outback Express, got significant attention this summer, Rathbun said.

The lift, built in 1987, was expected to last 25 to 30 years, but weather conditions have made it susceptible to breakdowns, Rathbun said.

“We’ve gone through and tweaked everything (on Outback) meticulously,” he said. “We’ve done everything short of replacing the entire lift. We get external conditions here — the wind, ice and snow — so that things may wear out faster.”

Within the next two years, Mt. Bachelor plans to replace Outback altogether or completely overhaul its terminals, Rathbun said.

An overhaul would cost $3.5 million, while a new lift would cost between $5 million and $7 million, he said.

Some of this summer’s maintenance, such as replacing worn-out parts on all lifts, is occurring to ensure last season’s problems aren’t repeated, Rathbun said.

Other improvements include replacing outdated microwave lines underneath the Pine Marten chairlift with fiber-optic lines. The equipment will give Mt. Bachelor more reliable communications throughout the winter, Rathbun said. Microwave lines have been used for phone, computer, Internet and other data connections within the ski area and into town.

Mt. Bachelor also is replacing wiring underneath the “hot walks,” which melt snow and ice on sidewalks that skiers and snowboarders use at the West Village Lodge and fixing the heated water system underneath the walkways at Sunrise Lodge, Rathbun said.

“By the time we finish our summer maintenance program, we will be in better shape than we’ve been in years,” he said.

Other improvements include new bathrooms at the Nordic Center and an exterior coat of paint at West Village Lodge, he said.

Mt. Bachelor also worked with the Oregon Department of Transportation to order a new $500,000, state-of-the-art snowblower, the kind ODOT uses to clear snow on mountain passes, he said.

The new snowblower, used for clearing parking lots of ice and snow, will arrive in time for the season, Rathbun said.

Generally, I agree with what you say, ihatetoburstyour bubble. But on one point, you're so far off - well, it balances the rest of your rightness.

Lib women won't go near Palin. Not a chance. If there's one thing that's more irritating than macho men who put women down with not-so-subtle jokes, it's women who ride on the coattails of women who've actually walked the walk, but whose every action would destroy the gains made by years of struggle.

Palin is a piece of shit.

On the other hand, she is a good choice. She redirects attention away from McCain. She pulls in the evangelicals, who were lost until her nomination. She brings in the closet bigots. A great choice, but not because she'll pull Hillary voters.

[ Name it BITCH ]

Palin is a piece of shit.

[ Explain it BITCH. This is STD DEM shit, just saying crap like 'palin is shit', but why?]

FEMINISM is about women being independent. Read fucking Emma Goldman, learn your fucking feminist history and theory. PALIN embody's FEMINIMISM. The problem is that DEM women want OR-BOMB-EO to tell them how to live or the DEM party. PALIN really does march to her own fucking drummer. This can never be tolerated by the DEM's Thus PALIN is a feminist in the truest form, there is NO doubt here that PALIN's hubby is a kept-man, house-hubby. PALIN is a strong fucking women.

THE DEM's want to put PALIN back into the closet. They don't want ICON's like PALIN who say "The Press is a private club, that I don't care to join".

The DEM's bless HILLARY BITCH, but what is she? A fucking PARROT LAWYER who has learned all the tricks. HILLARY is not FEMINIST, HILLAY is 'DICK cheney' in DRAG.

DEM HILLARY is the ultimate 'angry white bitch', PALIN cares about people, and doing the right thing.

It's so fucking AMAZING to hear Cindy Mc$ane say she'll be the next Princess-Di, and ban land-mines, & cluster-bombs, yet team OR-BOMB-EO wants MORE cluster-bombs. The DEM's are going to the right, and the Repug's too the left, and the DEM's are so fucking DESPERATE, they don't even tell OR-BOMB-EO to stop.

I hate DEM's & REPUG's, but PALIN walks the walk, and has MORE in common with 90% of AMERICA than the rest of the silver spoons in this campaign.

Millionaire homebuilder and bronze hawker Roger Pollock faces drug and assault charges.

BY NIGEL JAQUISS

Few local businessmen have fallen farther faster than Roger Pollock. Two years ago, Pollock was the largest homebuilder in Oregon, named by Inc. Magazine as one of the nation's leading entrepreneurs under 40.

At the time, Pollock was operating in the upper echelons of local Republican politics. Three Junes ago, for instance, he held a $500-per-head fundraiser at his 12,600-square-foot waterfront home in Lake Oswego for 1998 Republican 1st District congressional candidate Molly Bordonaro.

The event was hosted by Sen. Gordon Smith and others, including Bob Pamplin, Sr., developer Homer Williams and Jeffrey Grayson. Bordonaro eventually lost narrowly to David Wu.

In 1999, Pollock sold his company, RMP Properties, for more than $7 million. Since then, he has been developing a large stretch of beach near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and running Provenance Fine Arts, a company that markets bronze sculptures, created by the Ghiglieri family, to nonprofit auctions across the country.

A WW cover story about Provenance (see "In the Name of the Father," Jan. 24, 2001) raised questions about the validity of the appraisals that the company uses to market its art.

Today, Pollock's world is in tatters. Early this year, he pled guilty to driving while intoxicated and was accused in divorce proceedings of physically abusing his wife, Kristy. On April 4, he was indicted by a Multnomah County Grand Jury on charges of possession and delivery of MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, and assault in the fourth degree.

Court documents show that shortly after midnight on March 28 police responded to a 911 call from Dante's nightclub on Southwest 3rd Avenue. There, police arrested Pollock for the alleged assault of a woman named Katie L. Andersen.

Also, police allegedly found Ecstasy in his possession in the course of the arrest. If Pollock is convicted of possession and delivery of Ecstasy, he could face up to 20 years in prison, although such a sentence is unlikely.

Pollock, now 40, was scheduled for a court appearance on June 5. But he missed that date with the judge's permission because, in mid-May, he entered the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kan., as part of his sentencing agreement for his earlier DUI conviction.

In addition to his legal problems, Pollock may be experiencing financial difficulties. Company records reviewed by WW show that the former homebuilder has pumped more than a million dollars into Provenance; the records also show that the company lost money in 2000.

Over the past 18 months, Pollock has uncharacteristically unloaded several parcels of real estate, including a building at 5909 SW Corbett Ave. that he sold in April 2000 for $460,000. His agent on the sale was Bordonaro, now a commercial real-estate broker with Norris, Beggs & Simpson.

For a time, Pollock even placed his treasured home on the market, asking $7.5 million for the property. Ironically, the most interested buyer was Blazers power forward Shawn Kemp, who reportedly offered Pollock $5.5 million for the house before his season was cut short by drug problems.

Pollock, who did not return WW's call, is scheduled to appear Sept. 10 in Multnomah County Court for pretrial conference; his lawyer, Stephen Houze, expects the trial to begin shortly thereafter.

Former Buena Vista worker accused of extortion

Samuel Portesi

LAKE OSWEGO -- A Beaverton man fired from his job with Buena Vista Custom Homes Inc. has been arrested and accused of trying to extort money from the company.

Samuel Joseph Portesi, 34, was arrested Wednesday by Lake Oswego police. He was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on accusations of theft by extortion, a Class B felony, and menacing, a Class A misdemeanor.

Portesi was released later Wednesday, after posting $3,250 bond against bail of $32,500. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Clackamas County Circuit Court on Sept. 25.

Mike Higgins, spokesman for the Lake Oswego-based Buena Vista, said Portesi worked for the company as a construction site superintendent from 2002 until recently, when he was fired.

Higgins said Portesi then began making false statements about the company to subcontractors, customers and the public, in an apparent attempt to tarnish the company's name. He said Portesi then told company officials he would stop only if they paid him.

Buena Vista officials then contacted Lake Oswego police, said Lt. Dale Jorgensen, police spokesman. Police arrested Portesi without incident at a Beaverton Starbucks .

The exact nature of the statements, or how much money he sought, was not available.

A statement by Buena Vista president Roger Pollock described Portesi's statements as "slanderous and erroneous," saying they triggered "hysteria."

Buena Vista has suffered in the recent housing-market downturns and credit crunch. A bank has started foreclosure on 15 of the company's homes, but Pollock says the company is not going into bankruptcy.

Roger Pollock the owner of Buena Vista is a bad dude. I have seen first hand the way he treats people and small business, from his days as owner of RMP properties to now.
The truth hopefully will come out in court, provided Sam gets that far. Roger has a track record of dragging legal battles on in an attept to bleed his opponents dry financally.

The issue here is NOT POLLOCK.

The issue is ...

1.) That the lake-no-negro would take the complaint seriously and arrest the ex-employee

2.) That the lawyers working for POLLOCK are obviously getting paid well.

3.) That POLLOCK was successfully able to get a criminal complaint prosecuted which takes virtually no proof in court. Had this been civil, POLLOCK would have expired by trial.

This is some SCARY fucking shit, that I haven't seen since the dawn of MODERN police, in the late 1800's, when police were created ( city cops ), the companys used police to destroy unions, and arrest people for complaining about non-payment of wages.

I think that BEND is exactly like Lake-NO-NEGRO, if HOLLERN had an employee come forward in this town about the truth, he would have them arrested just the same, and the city/county law enforcement would go along 100%.

Government takes over embattled Fannie, Freddie

By Glenn Somerville and Mark Felsenthal 42 minutes ago

The U.S. government on Sunday seized control of mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae (FNM.N) and Freddie Mac (FRE.N) in an aggressive move to help the distressed U.S. housing market and economy.

Officials were concerned mounting losses at the two companies, which own or guarantee almost half of the country's $12 trillion in outstanding home mortgage debt, was sapping their vitality and threatening to undermine them at a time other sources of housing finance have largely run dry.

"Our economy and our markets will not recover until the bulk of this housing correction is behind us," Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said at a news conference. "Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are critical to turning the corner on housing."

The decision to take control of the companies, which have $1.6 trillion in debt outstanding, and place them into a conservatorship under their regulator could amount to the largest financial bailout in U.S. history. The Treasury Department, which is taking an equity stake in the two firms, said there was no reason to expect that taxpayers would have to shoulder losses.

The companies have suffered combined losses of nearly $14 billion in the last four quarters and large holders of their debt, including overseas central banks, have begun to show signs of increasing nervousness over their financial health.

"I strongly endorse both the decision by (Federal Housing Finance Agency) Director (James) Lockhart to place Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into conservatorship and the actions taken by Treasury Secretary Paulson to ensure the financial soundness of those two companies," Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a statement.

"These necessary steps will help to strengthen the U.S. housing market and promote stability in our financial markets," he said.

As part of the plan, FHFA will operate the companies until they are stabilized and the Treasury will extend financing until December 31, 2009, if needed.

In addition to the new financing facility, Treasury said it will take an equity stake in the two firms through senior preferred equity shares and warrants.

"Under the terms of the agreement, common and preferred shareholders bear losses ahead of the new government senior preferred shares," Paulson said.

Treasury also set up a program under which it would buy mortgage-backed securities currently held by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to pump fresh funds into the mortgage market. It said it would begin buying MBS later this month, and it would have authority to make such purchases through December 31, 2009.

The stocks of the two companies have fallen more than 90 percent in the past year and in recent months foreign investors have pared their holdings of the companies' securities.

Paulson said that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were so large that "a failure of either of them would cause great turmoil in our financial markets here at home and around the globe."

Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin isn't giving interviews to the news media and won't until ``the campaign is ready,'' campaign manager Rick Davis said today.

Palin will answer questions from reporters ``when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it,'' Davis told ``Fox News Sunday.''

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was picked by Republican presidential nominee John McCain on Aug. 29 to be his running mate. Palin gave a speech at the Republican National Convention and has appeared at campaign events.

``She's not scared to answer questions, but you know what?'' Davis said. ``We run our campaign, not the news media.''

``Sarah Palin will have the opportunity to speak to the American people,'' Davis said. ``She will do interviews, but she'll do them on the terms and conditions'' the campaign decides.

What does this mean? It means that Sarah Sockpuppet is not ready for prime time. It means she is uninformed, unprepared, can't think on her feet, and would make an ass of herself if allowed to answer real questions from real reporters.

So the RepubliCAN'Ts let Sarah Sockuppet deliver her little prepared rant to the convention, and they will let her deliver a condensed version of it on the campaign trail, but they won't let her answer any questions. Maybe, eventually, they'll let O'Reilly or Hannity "interview" her on Faux Gnus, throwing her a couple of softball questions that she'll probably be fed in advance.

Sarah Sockpuppet talks a good game, but when anybody challenges her on anything we get: "You mean reporters can't ask me those nasty questions about my qualifications and my experience and troopergate and the Bridge to Nowhere and how I left my town $12 million in the hole because I'm a WOMAN (sniff, sniff) and a MOTHER (boo-hoo!)"

Pit bull? More like a little whining Pomeranian.

There's supposed to be a debate between Sarah Sockpuppet and Joe Biden, but here's my prediction: Sarah Sockpuppet will wimp out of it, claiming some sort of "family emergency" involving her pregnant daughter or her own Down syndrome baby.

Sarah Sockpuppet is a nine-days' wonder. Her surge in popularity is based on one canned speech delivered in front of a wildly partisan, extremely friendly crowd. But there's no substance to the woman. She's an empty pantsuit. There's no THERE there. She's a mediocre person who less than two years ago was mayor of an Alaskan town about the size of LaPine. She's uninformed, she's uneducated, she's inexperienced, she's unqualified, she's a lousy administrator who practices cronyism and fiscal irresponsibility ... AND she's a right-wing extremist whose views are out of step with 75-80% of Americans.

The Repubs cannot keep Sarah Sockpuppet in a bubble of isolation forever. It will not be long before all the crap about her comes out and Sarah Sockpuppet blows up in their faces. I give it three weeks -- four at the most.

And 2nd place gets even.

And 2nd place becomes 1st place & sails on by, and wins.

STAY ON TARGET. Dem's deserve a shot, REPUGS have fucked it up for almost a decade starting from the strongest position a Prez has ever started with: 9/11. OK, we are dumbfucks and deserve to be thrown out.

This is why your our pussy.

Everytime the IRS has simplified the tax system, another 10k tax-lawyers are needed.

'Simple', true simplicity can only be a doctor in every village-hut working for free, this is how its done in Cuba.

In Cuba anyone can go to med-school, and a doctor makes a whopping $100/week, if they're lucky.

In the US system the AMA keeps doctors rare, the insurance companys keep most of the money, and the drug-companys take whats left. Most doc's in the US I know today spend most of their income on insurance for mal-practice.

The US system will never get more simple pussy, its called ENTROPY in physics.

Dis-Order is always progressive, there will never be ORDER coming from dis-order.

This is the whole fucking problem with the 'pussy' he uses words like 'simple' or 'change' which are PAVLOVIAN triggers for DEM's.

Doing the right thing for now, maybe. But can the Repubs keep her packed away in cracked ice until Election Day? Or are people going to start asking, "Why won't Sarah Palin answer questions? What is she afraid of? What is she hiding from? Is she really ready to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?" (And a 72-year-old heart at that.)

Of course, the Democrats need to start asking those questions. And they need to do it now.

Tim: I see the "Sarah Sockpuppet" gibe hits you where it hurts. Good. I'll keep using it.

BTW, your claim to be an "independent" doesn't fool anybody. You're a Republican, heart and soul, no matter what your voter registration is.

There's the PUSSY, anti capitalism, single payer NAZI system, he calls simple.

All doc's would have to grovel to get paid by the NAZI-admin of OR-BOMB-EO. Single-Payer HRC called it, BP calls it simplicity.

All it would to is make good docs work under the table for CASH, and bad docs represent your FREE MED GIG.

Yeah, I know. The Canadians were able to pull it off back in the early 60's, but we're pretty much fucked. Even the Dem's plans simply put lipstick on the health insurance pig.

Yep, we got'em, too. We just don't repeatedly tell the same lie over and over again. Like the selling the plane on EBay lie or the "told them we didn't need a bridge to nowhere" lie.

Nobody is asking this question except DEM spokes-people.

Lets understand this the DEM party is going insane, and all the VOODOO bitches with their BP/HBM script want to stick pins in PALIN in public, and she is going to go along??

This is why you DEM's be stoopid.

OR-BOMB-EO ONLY does well in front of a tele-prompter. How come he refuses to do town-hall? Where the public can hammer his ass on specifics? WHY? Because he'll not do it, becuase he can't do specifics, he only does generalizations, and he's got about 100 scripted by heart.

Like Mc$ane when asked 'how many houses do you own', hell I couldn't answer that question either, I really don't know. In his case they're not even owned by him.

Let's get back to what makes Mc$ane & OR-BOMB-EO different? We already know they're OWNED BY THE SAME PEOPLE.

Mc$ane would be a riot, and SaBar as his side-kick.

OR-BOMB-EO & BIDEN are going to be fucking boring. Like I have said from day-one here, OBE is going to do the 'Ask not what guv can do for you, but ask what you can do for guv', OBE will let BIDEN start wars all over the middle east, and OBE will get the DRAFT OK'd, and send all the niggers to die.

Mc$ane is a third generation navy family, his grandpa & father were admirals, the only case in American history. This is a family that truly respects the USA, and truly wants security. Both say what they think.

OBE/BI[BidenIsrael] only want to empower MORE lawyers, we already have lawyers running the courts, the house, if we let them have everything, then everyone will be poor.

Dude, go educate yourself:

Lot more here:
http://www.oecd.org/document/30/0,3343,en_2649_34631_12968734_1_1_1_37407,00.html

Then look at this doctors for single payer website:
http://www.pnhp.org/

The U.S. spends twice as much as other industrialized nations on health care, $7,129 per capita. Yet our system performs poorly in comparison and still leaves 47 million without health coverage and millions more inadequately covered.

This is because private insurance bureaucracy and paperwork consume one-third (31 percent) of every health care dollar. Streamlining payment through a single nonprofit payer would save more than $350 billion per year, enough to provide comprehensive, high-quality coverage for all Americans.

Then come back and tell me how great our healthcare system is.

Nobody ever said anything about free, except you.

Of course this is what is so fucking funny about HBM/BP the outright hypocrisy.

OBE[OR-BOMB-EO] only loses when he is before a crowd that asks real questions.

They'll never put OBE in a room full of buster's asking real questions, because he'll not answer them.

For example, from buster in public.

"Honorable OBE, you spent 20 years in the church of Rev Wright, who has documented exactly how Litton-Bionetics created the Aides virus on the behalf of the CIA. Which then was released in Africa, and Haiti. Given that you sat their for twenty years listening to these factual assertions do you believe them or not? If you do believe them, will you as president, end this program? Will you stop the endless genocide and incarceration on the blackman??"

Now OBE is never going to be in this position, because they'll never allow him to be in public forums.

All questions must be pre-scripted on cards. Do you all remember a few months ago when they tazed the college student for asking about 'skull & bones" from Kerry? This is what happens when you ask 'real questions'.

He who wins wars is the one who fucks up the least FUBAR.

He who wins elections is the one who says the least.

For newbies, the reason I don't want to see OR-BOMB-EO is that we can't have the DEM's run the house & exec, too much power. We need the Mc$ane VETO, and PALIN voice to stabilize what's left of our government.

If the DEM's want change, then they can create new legislation, and if rational Mc$ane will not veto, its the perfect system.

With PALIN rather than having a cheney running around the world killing people, we'll have an advocate for Downs, women, I really see a Teddy Roosevelt type of thinking in Palin, this could be very refreshing.

With Mc$ane having the most important military legacy in this country in his family, he has great respect by the military. Under TRIBE-BUSH the US miltary is near the breaking point, BUSH has run the troops to the ground. This is what you get when put silver-spoons in positions of power.

OR-BOMB-EO is/was a lawyer, a creation of the DEM party. His only consistent message is 'vote for me, and HOPE the government makes the right decisions for you'.

MORE of the SAME. Even on O'Reilly a few nights ago, OR-BOMB-EO was indistinguishable from Mc$ane on IRAQ.

Paulson Statement on U.S. Action on Fannie, Freddie: Text

Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Following is the text of a statement by U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson on the U.S. government takeover of mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac:

Good morning. I'm joined here by Jim Lockhart, Director of the new independent regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, FHFA.

In July, Congress granted the Treasury, the Federal Reserve and FHFA new authorities with respect to the GSEs, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Since that time, we have closely monitored financial market and business conditions and have analyzed in great detail the current financial condition of the GSEs - including the ability of the GSEs to weather a variety of market conditions going forward. As a result of this work, we have determined that it is necessary to take action.

Since this difficult period for the GSEs began, I have clearly stated three critical objectives: providing stability to financial markets, supporting the availability of mortgage finance, and protecting taxpayers - both by minimizing the near term costs to the taxpayer and by setting policymakers on a course to resolve the systemic risk created by the inherent conflict in the GSE structure.

Based on what we have learned about these institutions over the last four weeks - including what we learned about their capital requirements - and given the condition of financial markets today, I concluded that it would not have been in the best interest of the taxpayers for Treasury to simply make an equity investment in these enterprises in their current form.

The four steps we are announcing today are the result of detailed and thorough collaboration between FHFA, the U.S. Treasury, and the Federal Reserve.

We examined all options available, and determined that this comprehensive and complementary set of actions best meets our three objectives of market stability, mortgage availability and taxpayer protection.

Throughout this process we have been in close communication with the GSEs themselves. I have also consulted with Members of Congress from both parties and I appreciate their support as FHFA, the Federal Reserve and the Treasury have moved to address this difficult issue.

Before I turn to Jim to discuss the action he is taking today, let me make clear that these two institutions are unique. They operate solely in the mortgage market and are therefore more exposed than other financial institutions to the housing correction. Their statutory capital requirements are thin and poorly defined as compared to other institutions. Nothing about our actions today in any way reflects a changed view of the housing correction or of the strength of other U.S. financial institutions.

***

I support the Director's decision as necessary and appropriate and had advised him that conservatorship was the only form in which I would commit taxpayer money to the GSEs.

I appreciate the productive cooperation we have received from the boards and the management of both GSEs. I attribute the need for today's action primarily to the inherent conflict and flawed business model embedded in the GSE structure, and to the ongoing housing correction. GSE managements and their Boards are responsible for neither. New CEOs supported by new non-executive Chairmen have taken over management of the enterprises, and we hope and expect that the vast majority of key professionals will remain in their jobs. I am particularly pleased that the departing CEOs, Dan Mudd and Dick Syron, have agreed to stay on for a period to help with the transition.

I have long said that the housing correction poses the biggest risk to our economy. It is a drag on our economic growth, and at the heart of the turmoil and stress for our financial markets and financial institutions. Our economy and our markets will not recover until the bulk of this housing correction is behind us. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are critical to turning the corner on housing. Therefore, the primary mission of these enterprises now will be to proactively work to increase the availability of mortgage finance, including by examining the guaranty fee structure with an eye toward mortgage affordability.

To promote stability in the secondary mortgage market and lower the cost of funding, the GSEs will modestly increase their MBS portfolios through the end of 2009. Then, to address systemic risk, in 2010 their portfolios will begin to be gradually reduced at the rate of 10 percent per year, largely through natural run off, eventually stabilizing at a lower, less risky size.

Treasury has taken three additional steps to complement FHFA's decision to place both enterprises in conservatorship. First, Treasury and FHFA have established Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements, contractual agreements between the Treasury and the conserved entities. Under these agreements, Treasury will ensure that each company maintains a positive net worth. These agreements support market stability by providing additional security and clarity to GSE debt holders - senior and subordinated - and support mortgage availability by providing additional confidence to investors in GSE mortgage backed securities. This commitment will eliminate any mandatory triggering of receivership and will ensure that the conserved entities have the ability to fulfill their financial obligations. It is more efficient than a one-time equity injection, because it will be used only as needed and on terms that Treasury has set. With this agreement, Treasury receives senior preferred equity shares and warrants that protect taxpayers. Additionally, under the terms of the agreement, common and preferred shareholders bear losses ahead of the new government senior preferred shares.

These Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements were made necessary by the ambiguities in the GSE Congressional charters, which have been perceived to indicate government support for agency debt and guaranteed MBS. Our nation has tolerated these ambiguities for too long, and as a result GSE debt and MBS are held by central banks and investors throughout the United States and around the world who believe them to be virtually risk-free. Because the U.S. Government created these ambiguities, we have a responsibility to both avert and ultimately address the systemic risk now posed by the scale and breadth of the holdings of GSE debt and MBS.

Market discipline is best served when shareholders bear both the risk and the reward of their investment. While conservatorship does not eliminate the common stock, it does place common shareholders last in terms of claims on the assets of the enterprise.

Similarly, conservatorship does not eliminate the outstanding preferred stock, but does place preferred shareholders second, after the common shareholders, in absorbing losses. The federal banking agencies are assessing the exposures of banks and thrifts to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The agencies believe that, while many institutions hold common or preferred shares of these two GSEs, only a limited number of smaller institutions have holdings that are significant compared to their capital.

The agencies encourage depository institutions to contact their primary federal regulator if they believe that losses on their holdings of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac common or preferred shares, whether realized or unrealized, are likely to reduce their regulatory capital below "well capitalized." The banking agencies are prepared to work with the affected institutions to develop capital restoration plans consistent with the capital regulations.

Preferred stock investors should recognize that the GSEs are unlike any other financial institutions and consequently GSE preferred stocks are not a good proxy for financial institution preferred stock more broadly. By stabilizing the GSEs so they can better perform their mission, today's action should accelerate stabilization in the housing market, ultimately benefiting financial institutions. The broader market for preferred stock issuance should continue to remain available for well-capitalized institutions.

The second step Treasury is taking today is the establishment of a new secured lending credit facility which will be available to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks. Given the combination of actions we are taking, including the Preferred Share Purchase Agreements, we expect the GSEs to be in a stronger position to fund their regular business activities in the capital markets. This facility is intended to serve as an ultimate liquidity backstop, in essence, implementing the temporary liquidity backstop authority granted by Congress in July, and will be available until those authorities expire in December 2009.

Finally, to further support the availability of mortgage financing for millions of Americans, Treasury is initiating a temporary program to purchase GSE MBS. During this ongoing housing correction, the GSE portfolios have been constrained, both by their own capital situation and by regulatory efforts to address systemic risk. As the GSEs have grappled with their difficulties, we've seen mortgage rate spreads to Treasuries widen, making mortgages less affordable for homebuyers. While the GSEs are expected to moderately increase the size of their portfolios over the next 15 months through prudent mortgage purchases, complementary government efforts can aid mortgage affordability. Treasury will begin this new program later this month, investing in new GSE MBS. Additional purchases will be made as deemed appropriate. Given that Treasury can hold these securities to maturity, the spreads between Treasury issuances and GSE MBS indicate that there is no reason to expect taxpayer losses from this program, and, in fact, it could produce gains. This program will also expire with the Treasury's temporary authorities in December 2009.

Together, this four part program is the best means of protecting our markets and the taxpayers from the systemic risk posed by the current financial condition of the GSEs. Because the GSEs are in conservatorship, they will no longer be managed with a strategy to maximize common shareholder returns, a strategy which historically encouraged risk-taking. The Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements minimize current cash outlays, and give taxpayers a large stake in the future value of these entities. In the end, the ultimate cost to the taxpayer will depend on the business results of the GSEs going forward. To that end, the steps we have taken to support the GSE debt and to support the mortgage market will together improve the housing market, the US economy and the GSEs' business outlook.

Through the four actions we have taken today, FHFA and Treasury have acted on the responsibilities we have to protect the stability of the financial markets, including the mortgage market, and to protect the taxpayer to the maximum extent possible.

And let me make clear what today's actions mean for Americans and their families. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are so large and so interwoven in our financial system that a failure of either of them would cause great turmoil in our financial markets here at home and around the globe. This turmoil would directly and negatively impact household wealth: from family budgets, to home values, to savings for college and retirement. A failure would affect the ability of Americans to get home loans, auto loans and other consumer credit and business finance. And a failure would be harmful to economic growth and job creation. That is why we have taken these actions today. While we expect these four steps to provide greater stability and certainty to market participants and provide long-term clarity to investors in GSE debt and MBS securities, our collective work is not complete. At the end of next year, the Treasury temporary authorities will expire, the GSE portfolios will begin to gradually run off, and the GSEs will begin to pay the government a fee to compensate taxpayers for the on-going support provided by the Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements. Together, these factors should give momentum and urgency to the reform cause. Policymakers must view this next period as a "time out" where we have stabilized the GSEs while we decide their future role and structure.

Because the GSEs are Congressionally-chartered, only Congress can address the inherent conflict of attempting to serve both shareholders and a public mission. The new Congress and the next Administration must decide what role government in general, and these entities in particular, should play in the housing market. There is a consensus today that these enterprises pose a systemic risk and they cannot continue in their current form. Government support needs to be either explicit or non-existent, and structured to resolve the conflict between public and private purposes. And policymakers must address the issue of systemic risk. I recognize that there are strong differences of opinion over the role of government in supporting housing, but under any course policymakers choose, there are ways to structure these entities in order to address market stability in the transition and limit systemic risk and conflict of purposes for the long-term. We will make a grave error if we don't use this time out to permanently address the structural issues presented by the GSEs.

In the weeks to come, I will describe my views on long term reform. I look forward to engaging in that timely and necessary debate.

Out of the great-depression, you could no longer get a loan, the government created new quasi-guv businesses to guarantee investors.

F&F will be dissolved, and the good assets moved to FHFA ( 1933 like ), it will take a few years most likely, but the first step is 'investor safety'. The stock-holders have been told for 3+ years that F&F were going down.

I think a more interesting question is WHO WILL RUN TREASURY under OR-BOMB-EO?? Most likely McSame will keep these same people??

The great-depression was brought on by engineers ( HOOVER ), and 'fixed' by politicians (DEM's).

With FHFA they're on the right track, back the investors money with T-BILL's, and get the money back into the MTG market so people can buy houses, especially foreign investors, as US investor is an oxymoron ( poverty or convicts ).

Business loans dry up for the little guy

Randy Rasmussen, The Oregonian

Nicole Cathcart opened her dream business, a coffee shop and hair salon named Javarama and Barberama on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in January. The 36-year-old has had trouble staying afloat in a struggling economy with banks' tight lending standards.

Nicole Cathcart needs money.

The 36-year-old hair stylist knew expanding her salon would mean risks, even if these were the best of times. She knew, for example, she would rack up debt before making a profit. And that it would take a year, maybe two, to build her dream business: a funky hair salon and coffee shop in Northeast Portland.

But last month, Cathcart found herself doing the unthinkable: She put her salon up for sale after just eight months. After a slow start, she couldn't find a bank willing to lend her money to tide her over for the year -- even though they'd provided her money to get started.

"When you set someone up to fail, you can expect them to fail," said Cathcart, who employs 10 stylists and baristas. "I need working capital."

The financial crisis rocking the nation's lending industry is now taking its toll on small businesses in Oregon, making it harder for some mom-and-pops to take out loans and get financing.

As lenders tighten credit lines, small businesses are left in the lurch. Entrepreneurs can't get financing for startup projects. Businesses hit by a down economy can't get money to help them through a slow spell. Some can't get financing for needed supplies, so they run up high-interest personal credit cards.

Credit is a lifeline for small businesses and spurs economic growth by fueling expansion. With the housing crisis and crashing mortgage market, lenders are wary of giving money to businesses that have little collateral or owners without a proven track record of success.

The pendulum's swing from careless to cautious lending practices could slow an economic rebound in Oregon, which relies heavily on small businesses, some experts say. The tightened credit environment comes just as more people might be looking to start their own businesses in a slowing economy.

"When there's high unemployment, we get more people wanting to start their own businesses," said Jackie Babicky-Peterson, a business adviser for the Small Business Development Center at Portland Community College. "But capitalization holds them back. Money is worse than ever."
Hot coffee, cool cuts
After cutting hair for 15 years, Cathcart first opened a tiny hair salon on Northeast Broadway almost four years ago with $10,000.

Last year, the Buffalo, N.Y., native decided she wanted to expand and add a coffee shop. She found a spot on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and took out a home equity line to fund the $70,000 build-out, which features cool urban themes. Then she used three small loans totaling about $65,000 to help cover equipment costs.

Cathcart thought business would pick up and, because she's in an urban renewal district, could get help if she ran into trouble.

But then the money stopped flowing. The bankers told Cathcart there'd be nothing left for them to repossess if her business went under.

So, two months ago, Cathcart started using personal credit cards to buy supplies. That wasn't enough. Last month, Cathcart decided to sell the hair salon.

She says she needs $35,000 to pay her mostly part-time employees and taxes. She'll keep the coffee shop for as long as she can.

"Business is slow, but building," Cathcart said. "I need to find a way to get the coffee shop through the first year and I know it will pencil out. But I just have to think of what's best for everyone right now."

Business loans have always been tricky to land, even in healthy economic times, bankers say.

"Most banks are very, very strict on their underwriting for startup businesses," said Jerry Burns, senior vice president and manager of government guaranteed lending at West Coast Bank. "They need to show us that they have a reasonable chance of being successful."
Banks show caution
Over the past year, small business lending has slowed, showing signs of caution by banks.

The Small Business Administration operates a government-guaranteed lending program designed to kick in during times when private-sector lenders tighten their standards. So far this year, SBA lending has been down in the Portland area, showing banks' wariness to take any risks, officials say.

In the quarter ending June 2008, the local SBA office authorized 996 loans in the Portland area, a 25 percent drop from the same period last year. However, the total amount of the loans, $212 million, was only 2 percent less than the amount given out in the third quarter of 2007.

The numbers show that the banks are making fewer loans but in larger amounts, said Sylvia Gercke, a spokeswoman for the SBA's Portland office. In other words, lenders who offered the government-backed loans appeared more willing to invest in larger companies than in smaller businesses.

"The bankers are being cautious," Gercke said. "They are looking at larger deals and better credit risks."

Commercial lenders never reached the level of excess as residential mortgage lenders, who loosened standards to the point where some borrowers could get loans without showing proof of income -- liar loans, as they were called within the industry. Still, small businesses used to have easier access to a steady flow of money.

Kent Walton, small-business manager at Albina Community Bank, said banks are not being over cautious but are simply adhering to the normal credit policies, which were loosened in recent years.

"Where we used to stretch a bit, we aren't doing it anymore," said Walton, who noted that for a time, lenders would provide even more money than a borrower requested. "We used to give people more of a benefit of the doubt. But now, we don't want customers to get into something they can't get out of."

Banks are requiring higher credit scores, more equity, collateral and documentation before even considering an application, said Rick Stone, a business adviser at the Oregon Small Business Development Center.

Those high hurdles tend to hit small businesses and startups hardest.

Stone, who has worked in business for 26 years, says the current climate is vastly changed from recent years, when money was relatively easy to come by. There was lots of capital and the terms were favorable. The banks are acting more as they did in the 1980s, Stone said, when it was extremely difficult to get a loan.

"The banks and the underwriters have cut down so tight that people have to jump through more hoops," Stone said. "If you are a new business, you don't have the track record the banks are looking for."
Growing too fast
Elizabeth Bretko started her tea company Heartsong Chai in Ashland more than eight years ago. Then two years ago, the 36-year-old expanded the business by building a $150,000 brewery on her home equity line and family loans so that she could sell larger quantities to grocery stores. Her special teas sell for $3.29 a bottle, with a 50 percent gross profit margin.

This spring Bretko seemed to hit her pot of gold: Whole Foods, New Seasons and PCC Markets all placed orders. Sales tripled overnight.

But Bretko wasn't able to get a loan to buy the supplies she needed to fill the orders. The banks told her that her company was growing faster than they liked to see. And the bankers told Bretko that her growing credit card debt made her unbankable, despite the fact that she had $95,000 in sales in 2007 and had orders worth three times that in 2008.

She turned to her personal credit cards, burning through them in months.

"In hindsight, I should have never launched the bigger sales without the working capital to support it," Bretko said. "I just saw this opportunity and thought that there was no way we wouldn't get the money to go for it."

Bretko said her three-person operation has pulled back on filling orders because she can't buy the needed supplies. She expects that without more cash, she'll have to close her doors.

In Oregon, small businesses such as Heartsong Chai make up the vast majority of firms. As of the first quarter of 2007, more than 96 percent of businesses in the state that have employees had fewer than 50, according to the Oregon Employment Department. An additional 248,000 business are run by people who are self-employed.

Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees accounted for $4.6 billion in payroll at the end of the second quarter in 2007. Firms with more than 50employees accounted for $9.2billion in payroll.

A slowing economy has already frayed many small businesses, and a shortage of new capital only makes matters worse, said Harry DeWolf, head of the Small Business Administration in Portland.

"They are looking for relief," DeWolf said. "A lot of people are trying to hold on. For those on the borderline, this will accelerate their closure."

The recent credit crunch has underscored the reliance of the entire economy on the nation's banking institutions, said Jim Smith, chairman of the Portland chapter of SCORE, a national business advising organization.

A shortage of small-business capital could prolong the downturn in Oregon, which relies on such businesses to spark a rebound, he said.

"Our economy in Oregon is driven by these guys," Smith said. "And credit is the lifeblood of the American way of doing business."

Re: Obama and townhalls.

He's been doing them all over PA, OH and MI for the last few weeks. He actually takes questions from the audience, just like he did here in Bend.

I just saw part of one this morning, where he mocked McCain's new "change" theme, asking the audience if McCain was going to ask his lobbiest campaign manager or lobbiest chief advisor about how to do that change thing, to much laughter.

Re: specifics

Too complicated for TV. Go to his website and you'll find hundreds of pages about specifics.

Obama is smart, and that drives you guys nuts. He has run an incredibly disciplined campaign, but it's going to be a dogfight until the shine comes off Palin.

They'll keep her hidden away on a choke chain for as long as they can. But things like the new US magazine that just came out will make it harder for them.

They had to do this ( disembowel fan&fred ), think 1932 RE parylsis, nobody could get money. The new fed chairman is a student of the depression.

What they have done is cleaned the books on F&F, and started a new company that 'investors' will trust, its still going to take 1-2 years for investors to slowly come back to the table, unless high-rates are paid with 'AAA' risk.

Its all a confidence game, but honestly who has confidence in Goldman-Sachs Paulson? Watch Barney Frank, he's the barbarian at he gate that wants to do the same with the Federal Reserve, e.g. disembowel and re-invent.

It is a 100% TAX DODGE, WRAPPED IN A MORAL BULLY PULPIT. Perfect for a blood-thirsty profit-seeking hypocrite. ie Cali-Banger.

100% of ALL NON-PROFITS are started here to RAPE TAXPAYERS. That's why Scientology exists. Start some mystical bullshit & call it religion.

NON-PROFIT ART GALLERY? What the fuck is next? A bookstore? Oh right.

Kilns is a nonprofit bookstore, no double-entendre intended. It will be run entirely by volunteers, and the money will go right back into the store and toward the causes it supports.

This sort of thing is HIGHLY CONFUSING to liberal for-profit bookstore owners (who shall remain nameless), because shit like this so profoundly confuses Liberals, they end hung on the horns of The Frosted Flake Paradox:

It's not really about the US, its foreign investors that PAY all our bills. I wouldn't be surprised to see a special caveat that gives the CHINESE par-value for the new MTG outfit to convert to T-BILLS. Right NOW foreign investors have dried up, thus all we can do is print money, this is non-sustainable. Back in March Bernanke gave F&F $30B, that allowed them to handout money, but this is just printing money, which leads to inflation and insolvency, .e.g. higher oil prices as dollar collapses from devaluation.

We need outside wealth to come to the USA to be used to BUY our homes, otherwise its just a ponzi scheme that will default the entire USA.

Right now we have RE paralysis, the world is on the sideline waiting. We can't wait for OR-BOMB-EO or Mc$ane to do something, they BOTH refuse to acknowledge.

So Paulson/Bernanke students of the depression are doing something. Building foreign confidence in the USA. But the confidence is going to cost REAL wealth, taxpayers are going to be on the hook to the Chinese even MORE.

Right now if you have good credit, and BUY a house that is under 20% FMV you can get money, that is easy, we just print the money. But this is non-sustainable.

The issue is how to you bring back the foreign investor as quick as possible? It didn't help that BUSH-TRIBE told the entire world to fuck-off.

It's a fucking mess, just like our Bend.

It's always been difficult to get loans; the SBA loan papers were like 8 inches thick, and I passed.

Buster, taxes are a necessary evil.

What I hate is spending taxes on dumbass shit, especially outside the US. I'm hoping Obama is somewhat different, but I'm not counting on it. But I know McDrillMore is going to be more of the same BushCo. Because he has the same people behind the scenes.

Sarah Sockpuppet is just a pretty face that will only talk when Cheney pulls her strings. You can already see it happening. Having her as president, which could very well happen if they are elected, frankly scares me.

So I'm willing to give Obama a chance. But to be honest, Biden is a troubling choice in many ways. Israel, BK bill, etc. But he also gets some things right, like voting against the FISA expansion giving the telcoms immunity.

On the Israel issue, that's simply going to be fucked up forever, because AIPAC, PNAC, etc. control the message we hear through the mass media. It's all about "the only democracy in the Mideast" with whom we have a "special relationship." One called "bend over and take it like a man--your just lucky I lubed you up this time!" Nothing's going to change that in my lifetime.

What was that about "living in interesting times"?

More Liberal views on Palin, tim, IHTBY and buster have all hit the nail on the head. Willie confirms.

Palin floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee

-----------

The Democrats are in trouble. Sarah Palin has totally changed the dynamics of this campaign.

Period.

----------------
Palin's speech to the GOP National Convention on Wednesday has set it up so that the Republicans are now on offense and Democrats are on defense. And we don't do well on defense.

Suddenly, Palin and John McCain are the mavericks and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the status quo, in a year when you don't want to be seen as defending the status quo.

From taxes to oil drilling, Democrats are now going to have to start explaining their positions.

Whenever you start having to explain things, you're on defense.

I actually went back and watched Palin's speech a second time. I didn't go to sleep until 1:30 a.m. I had to make sure I got the lines right.

Her timing was exquisite. She didn't linger with applause, but instead launched into line after line of attack, slipping the knives in with every smile and joke.

And she delivered it like she was just BS-ing on the street with the meter maid.

She didn't have to prove she was "of the people." She really is the people.

There is one thing she should have done: announced when her 17-year-old daughter and the teenage father of the girl's unborn child are getting married and invited all of us to the wedding. It should be like Sunday at church.

As for Palin herself, she is going to be very, very effective on the campaign trail, especially if McCain's people can figure out how to gently keep her from getting into confrontations with the press.

If she can answer questions like she handled herself at the convention, Palin will turn out to be the most interesting person in all of politics, and the press will treat her like they treated Obama when he was first discovered.

And remember, the Palin bandwagon needs to roll for only two months.

-------

By the way, a note to John McCain: Get rid of the suits.

McCain is best with an open collar, his sleeves rolled up and in a Western shirt.

He doesn't come off well in suits at all.

They make him look old.

And Cindy - keep the hair up.

Not that I believe in polls much at this stage, but it's interesting that there seems to have been a sea change in attitude since the conventions started. (And my brother pointed out the polls when Obama was up by 8%.)

I STILL think this is Obama's to lose. I actually like Obama. Its his vicious voters that turn me off.

I KNEW this was a martyr situation with Palin. Is it easier to be sympathetic to a flawed woman VP candidate, or a bunch of dingos eating her babies?

It makes me sick that Democrats, of all people, have turned into such animals.

Anonymous Troll: I just now learned that Palin has agreed to be interviewed on ABC:

Gov. Sarah Palin will sit down with ABC News' Charlie Gibson for her first interview since winning the Republican vice presidential nomination, the network's news division confirmed today.

Palin accepted the nomination to be Sen. John McCain's running mate 10 days ago, but has yet to submit to questions from reporters covering the election.

The Alaskan governor was taunted by the spokesman of her Democratic counterpart, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, for not submitting to a grilling by the press.

Reporters covering Biden gave the candidate a cardboard cutout of McCain, and Biden spokesman David Wade promptly used the gag to take a poke at Palin.

Looks like the "Sarah Sockpuppet" attacks got to the GOP after all. It will be interesting to see how she does. I hope Gibson doesn't just lob softball questions at her.

Charlie Gibson reminds me of HBM a whole lot. He's a real hard hitting, no-holds-barred kinda journalist.

bruce said...

Just got back from store: Enquirer, US Magazine all over Palin "scandals", People has nicer article. The tabloids are having a field day. Some of her own extended family is turning on her.

A self-righteous fundie is hard to be very sympathetic to, at least for me, but I feel sorry for her pregnant daughter being shoved under the spotlight. The girl has enough problems without being publicly dissected.

Of course Gibson is going to lob softball questions at her. ABC is the network the fobbed the 9/11 documentary on us in time for the 2004 election. It will be scripted from start to finish. A Rovian classic.

I'm way more interested in seeing the debate on Oct. 2. It's hosted by Gwen Ifill, and is described as being more of a real debate:

A format change is being introduced in two of the presidential debates as well as the vice presidential debate.

Each of those debates will be divided into eight 10-minute issue segments; the moderator will introduce each segment with an issue on which each candidate will comment, after which the moderator will facilitate further discussion of the issue, including direct exchange between the candidates, for the balance of that segment.

Time will be reserved for closing statements by each of the candidates in each debate.

Paul G. Kirk Jr. and Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr., co-chairmen of the nonpartisan, nonprofit commission, noted that this change is aimed at increasing the educational value of the general election debates.

"Our mission is to promote voter education," they said. "The public deserves to hear and see the candidates offer and defend their positions on the critical issues facing our country in the most thoughtful and in-depth manner that television time constraints will allow. Loosening the constraints within the 90-minute debate will allow for more serious examination of complicated questions.

"This change will also open the possibility of the moderator inviting candidates to question each other. We want voters to benefit from as full an explanation of a topic as possible, and we feel certain that the candidates will welcome this change for the same reason," they said.

Direct exchange between the candidates. That sounds fun.

One problem that so many have these days is that they can't seem to live within their means; and many, many of them almost feel a sense of intitlement regarding their lifestyles.

Most people my parents age lived in much smaller houses, with smaller and more basic cars, no big screens, etc., etc., etc. They had less debt and were much smarter about spending and saving their money. And on top of all that, they were willing to work more that 8 hours a day...a lot more.

Who needed a manager and employees when you could do the work yourself?

That guy McGinnis has had two Bulletin "guest columns" now (one back on Aug. 4, this one on Sep. 21, both explaining how he, as a fireman who moved his family from Orange County to Bend but without giving up his Orange County fireman job, represents some kind of New Paradigm.

It would be one thing if McGinnis designed nanobots from his home office and had a videoconference setup for his frequent uplinks to Japan.

But he's a fireman. All his columns about how he represents the cutting edge of a demographic wave makes me think he's just convincing others, and himself, that the reason he moved his family up here ISN'T because he was afraid his 4 kids would end up getting knifed in the neighborhoods that a fireman could afford to live in in the O.C. - it's because he and his ilk represent a new paradigm.

A simpler reason for Pat McGinnis's plan is that, unfortunately and sadly, firemen don't get paid a whole lot, and Orange County is extremely expensive. And Pat has 4 kids. I guess you could call it white flight without changing jobs. I'm sure that an O.C. fireman gets paid a lot more than a Bend fireman, so he decided to take advantage of the 48-on/48-off shift structure and moved his family out of state.

For whatever reason, Patrick McGinnis is (1) convinced that white middle-class people getting priced out of California constitutes a viable and sustainable new economic base for Bend, and (2) really adamant about convincing everyone else that (1) is true.

Anyhoo, I think the fact that an Orange County fireman commutes to work from Bend says a lot more about how Orange County treats its firemen than it does about Bend's "new economy."

Out hiking yesterday, picking mushrooms, wandering, in deep contemplation I have now realized that we have entered a sort of convergence of economic political financing.

Since the 1920's AIPAC ( ADL, in all its forms ) has invested in both political partys. Even though 'Jewishness' is only 2% of USA they control almost all the media, and most of the 'law'.

With Cheney asserting the fact that a VP is in effect the prez, in the day, being VP wasn't worth "A bucket of warm piss" ( 1920's ).

So now today while AIPAC cannot elect a Jew ( AIPAC politically correct code ), they can have their patsies prez candidates pick VP's. So in effect one side has Lieberman, the other Biden, both pro AIPAC to the extreme.

So here's the crux of the theory with CHENEY now having legally asserted the presidency, this is the future, all the AIPAC men will go 'independent', AIPAC will NO LONGER finance both DEM's & REPUG's.

With the economy world-wide in the toilet unseen since the depression the paradigm has flipped.

The AIPAC controlled media allowed Cheney to explore presidential powers all during his two terms.

Today AIPAC only needs to own stable of 'independent' MEN/WOMEN who are then picked as VP-Candidates. The dream of a 100% pro-AIPAC man/woman in the whitehouse is now in reach.

If Obama is elected, AIPAC gets BIDEN to run the world, according to ADL vision. If McCain looks the winner, dirt on Palin will be released and he'll replace her with Lieberman. Lieberman of course is also a 100% AIPAC man like Biden.

AIPAC now cannot lose. Since the 1920's with the ADL creating the politically correct theory's of it being taboo to denigrate Jewishness. Even in that time, when HL-Mencken was making of of the ADL they labeled him as anti-semitic. What does it mean? Even an Arab is semitic. It means nothing.

Israel is about theft. Shirer years ago wrote 'Rise & Fall of the Third Rheich', many of Hitlers most loyal Jews, e.g. traitor jews were involved in the formation of Israel. Today Israel is about 'theft', e.g. stealing land from Palestinians.

Since the 1920's ADL with the major support & power of Walter Annenberg mobster & newsman created the Zionist dream in America. HL-Mencken long warned that any rich man could easily take over America by manipulating the common man ( bam-boozled ), Tocqueville saw this as well in the 1800's.

So long as AIPAC was 100% financed by US taxpayers they were willing to feed DEM's & Repug's. The US gave Israel billions of dollars a year since WWII, and in turn AIPAC gives the money to US politicians, first those that supported Jews, and today they have their OWN Jewish candidates.

Now to the issue of this WHOLE 'Jewish' non-sense. Israel ain't Jewish, its NAZI. The MOSSAD ain't Jewish, the CIA ain't christian. Post WWII with the NSC, and the National Security Act back in 1948. A new US was created.

So now we enter a new global depression, engineered by men like Greenspan. No longer can AIPAC afford to feed two party's. Thus there will soon just be one large 'independent party', which is quite funny, because this independent party, has a single issue at heart, and that is to murder every single Palestinian.

If one goes back to the late 1800's and reads about Zionism, one can see that they realized as Tocqueville did, that it would be quite easy to manipulate the US, to be a colony of mercenary's, not unlike the Irish or Scots had been in the past. Use them to destroy Israel's enemy's in the middle-east.

Let people like Bush get the oil profits and in return put them in political power. Now in our modern age, no longer are people like Raygun, Shrub, or even McCain needed. Today you can put people like Biden or Lieberman in the whitehouse.

There are many good Jewish people, however that is like saying there are good christians, which most are not. To be a christian means to lead the live of christ ( Gospels ), certainly most christians do not. It is said that Lieberman is a practicing orthodox jew, thus perhaps he is a true Jew. I don't know. What I do know is many Jews are poor, and many are liberal. The Jews who run Israel are right-wing, like Netanyahu. Most of his money comes from Schnitzer Steel of PDX, the worlds largest supplier of recycled steel.

A few men have always ran the world, read Carrol Quigleys books on 'civilization' and 'Anglo-American's'.

What of any of this? Certainly in the end Israel will be destroyed by the majority of Arab's in the region, certainly Israel has been a proxy to be used by BIG-OIL profits.

The future of the US is the ONE 'independent party'. The one thing that ADL/AIPAC is very good at is Orwellianism.

Tribes like Bush think they wag to dog, because they get the war profits, and oil profits. Tribes like Netanyahu & Schnitzer think they wag the dog, because they have fulfilled the Zionist dream of a Jewish homeland in Israel.

For Bush-Tribe the paper dollars can evaporate in a day. For Israel it can all end in vaporization if they continue the wholesale slaughter of Arab life. Who is right? Who really wags the dog? Old tales were that Jews were condemned to be the merchants and make money and toil in shops.

In modern Israel all has flipped, funded by the USA orthodox jews are all on welfare, and practice their religion without the need for labor or work. Physical work is done by Palestinians who are modern slaves, their uprising is much like the tales of Moses in the times of the Pharaoh's.

Nothing is ever simple. Human life has always been a struggle for men fighting over limited supply of good food, good looking women, and gold.

There was a time, that with the exception of say the Palestinians that there may have been some good folks involved in Zionism. Today Israel is ONLY about stealing land, developing condo's, and beach front resorts. We talk a lot about Bend Real Estate and development, but honestly Tel Aviv, makes Bend look like a ghost town.

Nothing is new under the sun. Life moves on we enter a new age in American politics where there is ONLY ONE PARTY. The Independent Party, a party 100% owned and controlled by AIPAC. All other partys will implode. Anybody that tells the truth, will be labeled anti-Semitic, a label worse than child-molester.

The AIPAC no longer has to pay for two party's, only one. A 50% drop in expense over-night, eventually there will be no need for elections, as all elections will only have one candidate, and thus like todays judges people will simply be appointed by AIPAC to hold office in our 'Democracy'.

WaMu said the regulatory warning concerns aspects of the bank's operations, especially related to risk management and compliance functions.

The bank said it will provide regulators an updated, multi-year business plan and forecast for its earnings, asset quality, capital and business segment performance. In a bid to reassure investors, WaMu said the plan "will not require the company to raise capital, increase liquidity or make changes to the products and services it provides to customers."

I prefer that the parties swing in and out of favor, and into and out of office. I can't stand when a party is in too long, like the Democrats were for a long time, then the Republicans.

What have I said? That Obama can win this one if his voters don't look like a mob of dingos. But that I knew the frustrated liberals couldn't resist taking a bite out of Palin's babies. That the Democrats desperately want to play checkers instead of chess.

Here's why the Democrats could lose this one...

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/f1984d88-7cd5-11dd-8d59-000077b07658.html

So we have three recent polls now with McCain on top. And at inTrade McCain has soared up to almost even (I think bid of 48) after looking terrible for months.

I've said come on Democrats, turn your thinking caps on and you can win. Stop looking like mean, terrible people. Promote your guy, for Pete's sake. Override your base impulses.

I called this one and all my most liberal buddies were telling me, oh no, Obama's a lock. Palin is a disaster.

Interesting article:
Heavily Shorted Financials

Given the rally that is hitting after the government takeover of Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE), I thought it might be useful to pull some quick data on the financials. Specifically, I pulled the component stocks for the SPDR-Financial (XLF) and the Dow Jones U.S. Financial Sector Index Fund (IYF). I then ran the list through a query to pull short interest and analysts ratings.

Companies among the most-heavily shorted are - Zions Bancorp (ZION), MBIA Inc. (MBI), Ambac Financial Group Inc (ABK), First Horizon National Corp. (FHN), E-Trade Financial Corp. (ETFC), The St Joe Company (JOE), Washington Mutual Inc. (WM), Huntington Bancshares Inc. (HBAN), National City Corp. (NCC), Raymond James Financial Inc (RJF), Americredit Corp (ACF), Capital One Financial Corp. (COF), Moody's Corp. (MCO), Radian Group Inc (RDN), MGIC Investment Corp. (MTG), optionsXpress Holdings Inc (OXPS), Freddie Mac (FRE), Comerica Inc. (CMA), BB&T Corp. (BBT), Piper Jaffray Cos (PJC), Jefferies Group Inc (JEF), CIT Group Inc. (CIT), Knight Capital Group (NITE), Fannie Mae (FNM), Wachovia Corp. (WB).

Nice chart at the link.

Bruce,

Jim Rogers on Fannie & Freddie.

He's always fun to watch.

Non-elected officials doubled the national debt this weekend.

Shares jumped 19% to $5.09 in recent premarket trading. WaMu's shares have fallen about 85% in the past year, and analysts say its financial position is among the worst of any major U.S. financial institution....

What can be said about 'investors' who BUY this crap on the FALL????

Note BOYZ, if you study your depression, like UNCLE-BUSTER has told you the big boys on the last depression, made their BIG money going short when all the banks were collapsing, all the insiders KNEW they were insolvent.

This game is playing exactly the same way.

I can only estimate that over 1/2 of WAMU's loans are non-performing, of course they'll never have to mark to market, but no worry.

A few weeks ago in Australia, they marked all US assets to market, and they had the worst bank stock collapse in history, but its over now.

In the USA we just keep watching the Titanic Sink, even thought it hit the iceberg years ago.

Marking all paper to true value today in the USA, would destroy ALL insurance, and pensions. It would be far worse than anything seen in the great depression. To eliminate complete shock, we'll continue to see the Titanic sink in slow motion.

Thanks I love Rogers, and he agrees completely, that F&F should fail.

I might add he even agrees that they already have failed.

Lastly, Rogers has been short F&F forever!!! Note this is HOW the RICH get RICH!!!!

Having spent close to 40 years reading and writing about the drivel we share here, one of things I see over & over with 'liberal/progressives' is intolerance for the other guys point of view.

By definition an educated man, is one whom can listen to the other guys point of view without hitting him.

Quite often what we do here is list the good points and bad points of ALL. Yet if you mention the bad-points of OR-BOMB-EO, your labeled a republican-troll.

If you list the good points of Mc$ane your listed a republican-troll. Your ONLY ALLOWED to list the good point of Obama, and the bad point of McCain. This is strange thinking, and quite possibly may explain why HBM is such a failure.

I'm not claiming to be a professional journalist, but have published my share of papers over the last 40+, and I have always found that understanding the motivation of the 'enemy' to be essential in winning the war.

We come to this common rock to share information, the good & the bad. Yet, we're told by NEWBIE HBM, that its taboo to mention certain subjects, e.g. Mc$ane in a positive light. All men have good & bad.

For most of us the 24/7 drivel of PRO-OR-BOMB-EO is nauseating, but we tolerate it, and never called HBM a troll!

To me there is only one motivational factor. There are three kinds of people.

1.) Those that make things happen.
2.) Those that know what is happening.
3.) Those who don't have a fucking clue what's going on

You choose which of the three, I think most DEM's think they're of #1, but they're really of #3. Most REPUG's are the same they think they're #1 ( part of the team ), but they only be #3. The TRUE INDIVIDUALS are #2 by educating themselves. The real #1's always stay behind the curtain.

I can't understand this. The Republicans put on the meanest, nastiest, snarkiest, most hateful, partisan and divisive political convention I have ever seen, climaxed by Sarah Palin delivering the meanest, nastiest, snarkiest, most hateful, partisan and divisive political speech I have ever heard, and somehow the DEMOCRATS are the "mean and terrible" people.

I guess it's the old IOKIYAR (It's OK If You're a Republican) principle in action.

I give up. I just fucking give up. Since Americans apparently enjoy being screwed in the ass, why should I try to deny them their pleasure.

"LA women NOT supporting Palin" - BP

*

Yes, BP but you didn't read the article. One woman said "I'll vote for the first person that talks gas prices, and that was Obama".

So there you go, someone how Obama will steal from one group, and subsidize another.

This is what is so pathetic about DEM's whether it be health-care, fuel, food. It's always ...

"I'll vote for the person who gives me something"

Then there is the Repug's "I'll vote for the person who lowers my taxes".

Same thing, but handouts is that which panders to the politics, as pointed out by HL-MENCKEN since the 1920's, American elections are bought/sold by the transfer of stolen goods.

So the DEMOCRATS who want cheap OIL, will put pressure on OR-BOMB-EO to secure MORE middle-east fields for cheap-oil, and lead to more death abroad, which always comes home to roost.

It's so strange, someone posted that Palin is rising in the polls with women, and the BP asserts a head-line that women don't like Palin, but the ACTUAL content of the story is that ALL will vote for the TEAM who promises the MOST pork, and the article makes it clear to date, that OR-BOMB-EO panders to the most parasitic.

Yes, rebut them, but don't call US republican-trolls. None of US are republicans, most of US, are deeply un-satisfied with ALL the partys.

I know, now HBM is going to tell us he didn't call anybody a REPUBLIC-TROLL, that it was the other hbm.

Which article?

HBM. When I told you last week that if the Democrats want to win they should shut up about Palin and focus on promoting their own ticket, you basically said, "yeah, you'd love that, wouldn't you."

To me, that sounded like a disinclination to consider winning strategies. I'm not sure where this comes from, unless it's for the fact that sometimes it's just easier to lose and snipe than it is to try to win and fix.

You acted like you thought attacking Palin (putting the focus on her) would help the Democrats. I thought it would hurt.

And have you always been a cusser like buster and a name mangler like Bruce? I don't remember that from you, but maybe I wasn't paying enough attention.

No HBM, like HOLLERN getting ALL SDC's deferred. Most americans just want something for nothing.

The Repugs after 7 years have robbed the country to the point of insolvency, they cannot with a straight face promise more pork.

On the other hand the Dem's promise all kinds of 'cargo cult' shit coming over the horizon, of course they'll just 'tax' some poor fucking group that didn't play, buts that another story.

I'm not sure where the mean-ness argument comes from. Certainly it is the DEM's attacking PALIN, its NOT the repug's.

Like the WSJ said six months ago, fighting OR-BOMB-EO would be VERY HARD, because no matter what you said or wrote, you would be labeled a nigger-hater ( sorry to tell it like it is ). Thus the Repug's have been noticeable been silent.

McCain won, because ALL the other clowns running were complete nut-cases ( mormrons ). Mc$ane because his father & grandpa were admirals, gets a lot of respect from the people WHO OWN THE USA.

Cindy McCain CEO/CHAIRWOMAN of HENSLY CORP, one of the largest BUD distributors in the world, near 1/2 BILLION DOLLARS annual gross sales, is certainly one of the most powerful women in the country!!! Think about that talking about feminism. I know HBM dumb fucking business CUNT will say she inherited it.

HBM, most silver-spoons like BUSH, are cocaine addicts, and need a dick cheney to wipe their ass.

It's rather clear that Cindy is a hard-working smart fucking biz woman. Talking about Palin, I'm surprised there isn't more talk about cindy, but see that is the brilliance here, the average USA women ain't smart or hard-working, not like cindy. Palin of course was just lucky, right place, at the right time.

PT-BARNUM said it HBM, and you KNOW it, 'NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE STUPIDITY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE".

HL-MENCKEN called them the 'bamboozled', today all is well.

All the debates here will not change the fact that he who panders to the dumbest and most slovenly american will win.

HBM, there mean-ness, and MEAN SHIT, but calling ME a republican is below the belt, we both cuss for fun, and we all make of fun the SHEEEEET, cuz we're in a world of sheeeeeet.

But calling someone a republican, that can you blocked even on this blog.

>>It's so strange, someone posted that Palin is rising in the polls with women, and the BP asserts a head-line that women don't like Palin, ... [more good stuff]

She does attract and repel at the same time, as any lightning rod. She is causing money to be donated to both parties.

She made people 29% MORE likely to vote McCain and 21% LESS likely. That's a pretty good spread in favor of her, but shows the intense reaction both ways.

Before all these polls came out, Democrats were laughing, saying she was a disaster and she'd have to be dropped in favor of Lieberman. That shows how little some people are in touch with reality and only want to see things from their own point of view.

I don't understand how someone can be so SURE that they are LEFT of center, but then be surprised when the average person doesn't share their views. That's logically crazy. It's a sort of "I'm left, and so is everyone else" delusional thinking. It's lake Wobegonian in lack of stastistical understanding.

Whereas the Republicans are "I'm right, and they are left." Which is a much more realistic view of reality that turns out to be a lot less surprising.

Frankly, though, both sides are like football fans. HBM not being surprised by the Seahawks losing may be a good rehearsal for the election.

BUT STILL, Obama is in the lead at inTrade, barely, and seems to have a pretty good electoral map. I'd still bet on him (for now). He's had every advantage handed to him, except for the dubious behavior of his flock.

He needs to grab his balls and jump into the game.

That's good that you don't have to pay taxes on your books as inventory. To date. Lucky you.

I have always had to pay taxes on filing cabinets, computers, desks, all the stuff that makes an office an office, and/or a BUSINESS.

Are you saying you don't pay tax on your book-cases even?

So explain all of a sudden why this Mirror Pond woman has to pay taxes on her art inventory?

A lot of people do pay taxes on their assets in business, perhaps the county just hasn't gotten around to BOOKS yet??

I still say it will be nasty of OR-BOMB-EO wins, and the DEM's control all of the house. BP thinks he'll get a golden shower of health-care, cheap-fuel, ...

Churchill said if you over 40 and not conservative you don't have a brain, and if your under 40 and not liberal you don't have a heart.

OR-BOMB-EO can win the under 40 crowd with 'hope' of the heart.

Mc$ane will get the over 40 crowd that knows there is NO free lunch.

'Hope' scares me the most, because it tells everyone that an election will bring them a container 'cargo-cult' of good's, all for just voting for the right candidate.

Trouble is like OUR BEND the USA needs to tighten the belt, and end the shit, otherwise all will become cannibalism.

hbm, I don't think he ever will figure us out. He must jump from DailyKOS and then right straight to BB2, screaming at both blog posters with the exact same retort:

"So what the fuck are you doing here, you fucking Republican troll?"

And then hbm writes:
